Rhinovirus, a type of enterovirus from the Picornaviridae family, is the most common cause of colds and causes up to 80% of all respiratory infections in peak seasons. It is thought that after penetrating the anterior nasal mucosa, the replication and infection of rhinovirus begins with transmission to the posterior nasopharynx and adenoids. Symptoms may begin as soon as 10 to 12 hours after inoculation. Symptoms can last up to 3 weeks. Nasal mucosal infection and the subsequent inflammatory response of the host causes vasodilation and increased vascular permeability. These events lead to nasal obstruction and rhinorrhea, while cholinergic stimulation causes mucus production and sneezing.
