What are feelings?
In general, emotions are complex reactions that arise from the interaction between our brain, body and external environment. Each emotion consists of three main parts:
- Subjective experience: What we feel inside, such as happiness, sadness, or anger.
- Physiological reaction: Physical changes such as increased heart rate or hormone secretion.
- Behavior or expression: a reaction we express outwardly, such as smiling, crying or silence.
The American Psychological Association (APA) defines emotion as "a combination of mental, behavioral, and physiological responses to events." In other words, emotions are a reflection of our inner understanding of the outside world.
