Painful swallowing is known as adenophagy in medical science. This pain when swallowing may be felt in the throat, mouth or esophagus, which has different causes. We will introduce them below. Swallowing with pain over time and over time causes damage to the throat and unwanted weight loss. Of course, these cases are more common and have other side effects that we will examine below. Painful swallowing is also known as Odynophagia in Latin.

What is painful swallowing or adenophagia?

If you feel pain while eating or swallowing food, you probably have adenophagia. Painful swallowing is a type of disorder that if a person suffers from it, he may have pain in the throat, mouth or esophagus when swallowing food, liquids or even saliva. It is necessary to explain the difference between adenophagia and dysphagia. If the patient has difficulty in swallowing food, he has dysphagia, but if he does not have a problem in swallowing and feels pain only when swallowing, he has adenophagia. Dysphagia can occur together with adenophagia, but these two diseases can also occur separately in a person. In most cases, dysphagia is more serious than adenophagia.

Disease symptoms Painful swallowing or adenophagia

Dinophagia will cause pain when swallowing dry foods and in some cases liquids and saliva. Symptoms of painful swallowing may be short or long-term depending on its causes.

  • a dull, burning or sharp pain sensation like a knife scratching when swallowing in the mouth, throat or esophagus
  • Increasing pain when swallowing dry food, in some cases, the pain of swallowing solids is no different from liquid.
  • Unwanted weight loss due to reduced food intake
  • Dehydration of the body due to the reduction of fluid intake

What are the causes of adenophagia or painful swallowing?

Various factors can cause painful swallowing, including:

  • Types of infections such as cold, flu and strep throat
  • Having inflammation in the mouth, throat or esophagus due to tonsillitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis or esophagus inflammation
  • Feeling of heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux, sometimes stomach acid enters the esophagus or throat and causes pain and inflammation. If the needle stays in the heart for a long time, it may turn into a stomach ulcer or indigestion.
  • Weakening of the immune system, those who are suffering from AIDS or undergoing radiation therapy or going through the stages of cancer treatment are more at risk of having adenophagia than other people.
  • Candida infection in the mouth, throat and esophagus

Diagnosis of adenophagy

Adenophagia is usually diagnosed by endoscopy. In an endoscopy test, the specialist doctor places a small camera with a light source in the patient's throat to see the inside of the esophagus. Also, sometimes the doctor asks the patient to swallow saliva during the test. If the specialist doctor suspects that painful swallowing has other underlying causes, he may prescribe more tests for a more detailed investigation.

Treatment of painful swallowing

The exact treatment of adenophagia or painful swallowing depends on its underlying cause. One of the treatment methods for painful swallowing is taking medicine. For example, drugs that are prescribed to treat gastro-esophageal reflux can prevent the acid from returning to the stomach and esophagus and eventually reduce the patient's pain when swallowing food. Medicines may also be prescribed to treat other underlying causes such as AIDS or other infections. Candida infections, which were one of the causes of painful swallowing, can also be treated with antifungal drugs.

If the patient has esophageal cancer or tumor, the doctor will probably suggest surgery to remove part of the esophagus or stomach. Also, if drug treatments for gastro-oesophageal reflux do not respond, the doctor may use surgery to cure the disease. If the specialist doctor does not detect any underlying reason with the necessary investigations, he suggests that the patient wait a little because it may be resolved with time. Because painful swallowing is a common symptom of a cold or severe allergy.

Should we go to a specialist doctor to treat painful swallowing or adenophagia?

In many cases, adenophagia will resolve on its own. Painful swallowing cases caused by a cold or flu will usually heal within a week. The causes of painful swallowing or adenophagia can usually be diagnosed through a simple examination of the throat. Especially when the patient has inflammation or infection.

In other cases, correct diagnosis requires throat swab sampling or endoscopy. If the cause of painful swallowing is not clear, you must see a gastroenterologist. Also, if adenophagia causes difficulty in breathing or eating, you should be seen by a specialist as soon as possible. If painful swallowing or adenophagia persists for several weeks, or painful swallowing is accompanied by weight loss and dehydration, you should definitely see a doctor.
