This problem can occur after one or a series of traumatic events and experiences. This disorder has different causes and symptoms that we talk about in this article. Read this article to learn about treatment methods. In what cases does post-traumatic stress disorder occur? Post-traumatic stress disorder occurs in the following cases: 1\. Physical or sexual abuse: People who have been physically or sexually abused or abused as children are at a higher risk of developing PTSD. 2\. Natural disasters: People who have experienced or witnessed natural disasters such as earthquakes, hurricanes, or fires are prone to PTSD. The sudden and uncontrollable nature of these events, the destruction of houses, the loss of loved ones and the fear of one's own life can contribute to this disorder. 3\. Traumatic events and injuries: People who have experienced severe events such as accidents, plane crashes, or industrial accidents may develop PTSD. Experiencing a life-threatening event, the suddenness of the incident, physical injuries, and witnessing the injury or death of others can lead to the development of PTSD symptoms and chronic stress. 4\. Difficulty concentrating or sleeping. - Shocking answer. Panic attack How to diagnose PTSD To accurately diagnose PTSD, professionals follow a comprehensive process that includes several steps: 1\. Physical examination: During the initial evaluation, the doctor may perform a physical exam to rule out any underlying medical conditions that could be contributing to the symptoms. 2\. Psychological evaluation: A psychological evaluation is done to gather detailed information about a person's symptoms, experiences, and overall mental health. This assessment includes the following: Discuss symptoms: The doctor will ask about specific symptoms experienced, such as intrusive thoughts, nightmares, avoidance behaviors, and changes in mood or cognition. - Trauma assessment: the doctor inquires about the traumatic event(s) that the person has experienced and evaluates the impact of these events on their psychological well-being. - Checking the mental health history: The doctor checks the health history, including any family history of mental health disorders. - Functional impairment: the doctor will evaluate how PTSD symptoms affect the person's daily functioning, relationships, work and overall quality of life. 3\. Diagnostic criteria: The diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is based on specific criteria outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) published by the American Psychiatric Association. These criteria provide a set of guidelines that clinicians use to determine whether a person meets the diagnostic criteria for PTSD. These measures include exposure to a traumatic event, duration of symptoms, and the presence of specific symptoms such as intrusive thoughts, avoidant behaviors, negative mood, and changes in arousal and reactivity. The therapist guides the person through a series of controlled and systematic exposures, allowing them to face their fears in a supportive and controlled environment. This process helps reduce the intense anxiety and fear response associated with traumatic memories. Over time, repeated exposure leads to habituation, where the distressing reactions are reduced and the person gains a sense of mastery and control over their reactions. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) EMDR is a therapeutic approach specifically designed to address and process traumatic memories. It involves recalling distressing memories while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, hand tapping, or hearing sounds. This two-way stimulation is believed to facilitate the brain's natural healing process, allowing the individual to reprocess traumatic memories and reduce the emotional distress associated with them. EMDR also incorporates elements of cognitive therapy, as individuals are guided to replace negative beliefs with positive, more adaptive thoughts. ### Drug therapy Antidepressants, anti-anxiety medications, and prazosin are medications commonly used to help control the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). 1\. Antidepressants: Antidepressants, especially selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), are often prescribed to reduce the symptoms of depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and concentration problems commonly associated with PTSD. SSRIs such as sertraline (Zoloft) and paroxetine (Paxil) are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) specifically for the treatment of PTSD. 2\. Anti-anxiety medications: Anti-anxiety medications, such as benzodiazepines (eg, lorazepam, alprazolam), may be prescribed to help relieve symptoms of severe anxiety, including panic attacks, restlessness, and hypervigilance. However, these drugs have the potential for dependence and addiction, so they are usually prescribed for short-term use or in certain situations where immediate relief from severe anxiety is necessary. Long-term use of benzodiazepines is usually avoided in the treatment of PTSD, unless other options have been ineffective. 3\. Prazosin: Prazosin is effective in reducing or suppressing nightmares associated with PTSD. It is believed to work by blocking certain receptors in the brain that are involved in regulating stress and sleep responses.
