How much sleep do children need?

The amount of sleep a child needs varies depending on individual and specific factors such as the child's age.... Here are some general guidelines mentioned by the best child specialists:

1-4 weeks: 15-16 hours per day

Babies usually sleep about 15 to 18 hours a day, but only in short bursts of two to four hours. Premature babies may sleep more, while babies with colic may sleep less.

Because babies do not yet have an internal biological clock or circadian rhythm, their sleep patterns are not tied to the day-light-night cycles....in fact, they usually don't have much of a pattern.

1-4 months old: 14-15 hours a day

At 6 weeks, the baby settles down a bit and you may start to see more regular sleep patterns emerge....the longest sleep periods last four to six hours and now usually occur in the evenings....the day and night turmoil ends.

4-12 months old: 14-15 hours a day

Although up to 15 hours of sleep is ideal by 11 months, most babies sleep only about 12 hours at this time... Establishing healthy sleep habits during this period is the main goal, as the baby is now more social and his sleep patterns are more adult-like.

Babies usually have three light, short naps, increasing to two around 6 months of age, at which time (or earlier) they are physically able to sleep through the night....generally, regular naps late in this period occur as biological rhythms mature...a pediatrician can advise you on how much sleep is appropriate for your baby.

1-3 years: 12-14 hours per day

As your baby reaches 18 to 21 months of age from the first year, he will probably miss his early morning nap and only sleep once a day.... Although toddlers need 14 hours of sleep a day, they usually only sleep 10 hours.

Most children between 21 and 36 months still need a nap, which can last from one to three and a half hours. They usually go to bed between 7 and 9 at night and wake up between 6 and 8 in the morning.

3-6 years: 10-12 hours per day

Children this age usually go to bed between 7 and 9 at night and wake up around 6 or 8 in the morning, just like when they were younger....At age 3, most children are still sleeping during the day, while by age 5, most are not....Daytime sleep becomes progressively shorter....New sleep disorders do not usually develop later in life

7-12 years: 10-11 hours per day

At this age, despite social, school, and family activities, bedtimes gradually get later and later, and most 12-year-olds go to bed around 9 p.m.... There is still a wide range of bedtimes from 7:30 to 10 p.m., as well as total sleep time (from 9 to 12 hours), although the average is only about 9 hours.

12-18 years: 8-9 hours per day

Adolescents' sleep needs are as vital to health and well-being as they were during youth....However, for many adolescents, social pressures conflict with the proper amount and quality of sleep.
