Let's taste the conscious taste of eating an apple.
Take an apple from the fridge. It doesn't matter what apple it is. Wash it and dry it. Now, before you take a bite of your apple, pause for a moment. Look at the apple in your hand and ask yourself: When I eat an apple, do I really enjoy eating it? Or am I so busy that I don't notice the pleasures that apple offers me?
For most of us, the second case applies. All our lives we have eaten apples without thinking about it. And with this careless eating, we have deprived ourselves of many pleasures in eating apples. Why do we do that, when it's easy to really enjoy apples?
The first thing is to give your full attention to eating the apple.
When you eat an apple, just focus on eating the apple. Don't think about anything else and most importantly be still. Do not eat apples while driving. Do not eat apples while walking. Do not eat apples while studying. Be calm and still. Concentration and slowness will allow you to understand all the qualities that apples have to offer: sweetness, aroma, freshness, juiciness and crispness.
Next, remove the apple from your palm and take a moment to look at it again. Take a few conscious breaths in and out to focus and connect with how you feel about the apple. Most of the time, we only glance at the apple we are eating. We pick it up, bite it, chew it quickly and swallow it. This time pay attention: what kind of apple is this? what color is it How does it feel in your hand? What does it smell like? As you review these thoughts, you'll realize that apples aren't just a quick snack to satisfy hunger. Rather, it is something more complex, it is part of a larger whole.
Then, smile at the apple, and slowly take a bite and chew. Pay attention to your inhalation and exhalation a few times so that you can focus only on eating the apple: how it feels in your mouth. What does it taste like, how is it to chew and swallow? Nothing else occupies your mind while chewing an apple, not projects, not deadlines, not worries, not to-do lists, not fear, not sadness, not anger, not past and future. There are only apples in your mind.
When you chew, know what you are chewing. For each bite you take, chew slowly and thoroughly 20 to 30 times. Consciously chew, savor the taste of the apple and its nutritious presence, immerse yourself one hundred percent in this experience. That way, you really understand the apple. And just as you become fully aware of eating the apple, you also become fully aware of the present moment. You are fully present in the here and now. By living in the moment, you can receive what the apple is giving you and thus become more alive. You will be full of life.
