Meniere's disease Maybe it has happened to you that you spin around and after you stop, you feel that the world is spinning around your head.... This state that many of us have experienced, especially in childhood, starts with spinning.... Now imagine that the world suddenly spins around your head without spinning.... This is the state that patients with Meniere's disease experience.... What causes it? This disease is a disease caused by the inner ear in which the patient feels very dizzy and can show other symptoms such as ringing in the ear, hearing loss and heaviness or pressure in the ear. Unfortunately, this disease is a progressive disease that gets more severe symptoms over time and can cause permanent hearing loss. Fluid inside Since the inner ear is responsible for delivering auditory and balance information to the brain, its disruption causes problems in the messages that reach the brain. It can be in both categories of messages There are various theories to investigate the cause of fluid accumulation in the inner ear, such as poor drainage of fluid, genetic infections, blockage of its path, genetic infections, viral diseases, blockage of its path. Talent, head trauma and migraine headaches are included in this theory. It lasts from 20 minutes to 24 hours and is repeated several times during a week.. Of course, in some people, there may even be a year between their vertigo attacks... Also, in the early stages of this disease, patients occasionally suffer from hearing loss, which usually becomes permanent over time and one ear becomes completely deaf.. Other symptoms of this disease include the following: - Tinnitus - Feeling of pressure or heaviness in the ear - Blurred vision - Diarrhea and chills - Some patients who suffer from this disease, have severe attacks of vertigo that make them lose their balance and suddenly fall to the ground... this is called drop attack.. It is worth noting that the symptoms of this disease may change over time or some of them may become permanent, and it should not be assumed that this disease will improve by itself.. As a result, the patient must be under the supervision of a doctor and have his conditions under control.... Sudden attacks that occur are dangerous and especially if the patient is driving at the same time, accidents may occur... This progressive disease has no cure, but by doing some things, the symptoms can be controlled or eliminated... #### Drug treatments: - Meclizine, diazepam, glycopyrrolate and lorazepam to treat or reduce vertigo - Diuretic drugs to reduce body water and inner ear fluid pressure - Injection of the antibiotic gentamicin in the middle ear to control vertigo... Of course, this drug increases the risk of hearing loss, that's why some doctors use corticosteroids instead of gentamicin... #### Nutritional and behavioral treatments: - Reducing salt consumption to prevent water accumulation in the body - In some people, the consumption of caffeine, alcohol and chocolate worsens the symptoms, so it is better to eliminate or reduce these things.... - Quitting smoking helps to reduce the symptoms... #### Surgery: - If other methods do not help reduce the patient's vertigo, surgery is chosen to reduce inner ear pressure... Of course, sometimes it happens that the neurosurgeon cuts the patient's vestibular nerve... #### Alternative treatment methods: - Things like acupuncture, special exercises like tai chi, herbal supplements like ginkgo biloba or ginger root, etc. are some of the things that some people may try, but the accuracy of these treatments has not yet been determined... ### At what age does Meniere's disease occur? Most cases of Meniere's disease occur in adults between 40 and 60 years old. this disease It occurs in those who do not have a family history of it, or in other words, this disease has a sporadic spread.. but a small percentage of the reported cases have spread in families.... Since hereditary and familial diseases usually have an autosomal dominant pattern, it is possible that Meniere's disease also has a similar pattern, but no genes related to this disease have been identified in the studies... ### How is Meniere's diagnosed? After examining the symptoms, medical and family history of the patient, as well as performing tests such as balance test and audiometry, the doctor diagnoses this disease. The diagnosis of this disease, the related tests and subsequent treatment steps are performed by an otolaryngologist. ### Can Meniere's disease be cured? According to Harvard Health Magazine, there is no cure for Meniere's disease.. Once diagnosed, the disease continues for the rest of your life.. But symptoms usually appear and disappear suddenly, and only some people with Meniere's disease will experience permanent disability.. What is the outlook for Meniere's disease? According to the National Organization on Deafness and Communication Disorders, scientists estimate that six out of 10 Meniere's patients get better on their own or can control their vertigo with diet, drugs or devices, but only a small percentage get better with procedures like surgery.
