A new method in eye surgery; Performing the first FLACIK corneal transplant operation in the world at Farabi Hospital Dr. Mehrdad Mohammadpour, Professor of the Eye Diseases Department of Tehran University of Medical Sciences and cornea specialist, and his group, for the first time, successfully performed the new corneal transplant surgery method called FLACIK (Femtolaser Assisted Customized Intrastromal Keratoplasty). This advanced technique, which is considered an evolved version of the CAIRS 360 degree method, has opened new horizons for the treatment of patients who need a corneal transplant.
According to the public relations report of Farabi Hospital of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Dr. Mehrdad Mohammadpour, explaining this new surgery, stated that several cases of this operation have been performed in Farabi Hospital, but the recent case was one of the most successful examples due to the changes applied to the tissue. This method is considered an ideal option especially for patients who are candidates for cornea transplant but are unable to perform a complete transplant due to personal reasons, distance or risks of open surgery.
Advantages of the FLACIK method over other methods
According to Dr. Mohammadpour's explanation, this surgery has unique features that make it a "revolution in corneal transplantation". He said about the advantages of cornea transplant using the FLACIK method: "This operation is performed without anesthesia and stitches and with local anesthesia, and the patient does not need general anesthesia or stitches." The patient's recovery period is also very short and after the operation, the patient's vision improves day by day. Also, due to the nature of this method and the use of stromal cells, the risk of transplant rejection is almost zero."
Farabi Hospital's cornea specialist added: "One of the other advantages of this surgery is that in this method, there is no need for frequent patient visits and many follow-ups."
An intelligent solution for graft tissue management
One of the most important aspects of FLACIK surgery is the optimal management of eye bank resources. In a situation where many patients are on the waiting list to receive corneal tissue, this method only uses stromal cells of the corneal tissue. Dr. Mohammadpour explained about this: "In this method, a tissue was used whose other parts, like stem cells, were used for another patient. We used only its stromal cells. For this reason, with FLACIK surgery, the problem of limitations of the eye bank can be managed to a great extent."
According to the words of this cornea specialist of Farabi Hospital, we can conclude that FLACIK surgery promises a new era in the treatment of corneal diseases such as keratoconus in Iran. This success in Farabi Hospital shows the ability of Iranian specialists to use the latest technologies in the world to improve the visual health of society.
