The importance of proper nutrition in dental health

Dr. Mehdi Ali Babaei > Blog > Weblog > The importance of proper nutrition in dental health

Good nutrition and healthy teeth go hand in hand. Eating a variety of nutrient-rich foods from all food groups promotes healthy teeth and gums. A balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, protein foods, calcium-rich foods, and whole grains provides essential nutrients for oral and dental health, as well as your overall health.

If your diet is low in the nutrients your body needs, your mouth may have a harder time resisting infection, contributing to periodontal disease, a leading cause of tooth loss in adulthood. Although poor nutrition does not cause periodontal disease, many researchers believe that with poor nutrition, the disease progresses faster and can be more severe in people with poor diets.

The health of your mouth and teeth is equal to what you eat

Table of Contents

Good nutrition and healthy teeth start with assessing what comes into contact with your tooth enamel every day. Every food you eat or drink affects the health of your teeth. Food choices constantly affect the health of your teeth and gums. Many foods in a typical diet, from sugary and processed foods and beverages to those that are highly acidic, can wear down your tooth enamel and cause cavities. It is critical to focus on good nutrition and healthy teeth goals by proactively consuming healthy foods that promote oral health.

Food patterns and food choices among children and teenagers are important factors that affect the rate of tooth decay. When bacteria in the mouth come into contact with food, acid is produced that attacks the teeth and can eventually lead to tooth decay, especially if flossing and brushing are not done regularly.

When it comes to tooth decay, food choices play an important role. Some foods can damage your teeth, while others contain essential nutrients to keep them healthy and strong.

When you are looking to follow a healthy diet that is good for your teeth; Try to stick to the food pyramid, which is designed to give you a healthy meal from all the necessary food groups. To support your goals for good nutrition and healthy teeth, read this article about the foods that are best for you.

What should we eat to have good nutrition and healthy teeth?

We all know that we should limit snacks and avoid sweet or acidic foods, soft drinks, and starchy or sticky foods. Below are some foods that are useful for oral and dental health and contain essential nutrients to maintain the health and strength of teeth.

Whole grains

Whole grains provide B vitamins and iron, which help keep gums healthy. Whole grains also contain magnesium, which is an important element for bones and teeth. In addition, whole grains are rich in fiber. Look for foods like bran, brown rice and whole grains and pasta to be good sources of whole grains.

Foods rich in calcium

According to the Dental Association, those who eat foods containing calcium and phosphorus, such as meat, eggs and fish, can help keep tooth enamel strong and healthy and are less likely to get gum disease. Calcium is a key ingredient to prevent tooth decay, especially for growing children. Dairy products such as milk, yogurt and cheese are excellent sources of calcium. Other options include leafy greens, canned fish, almonds, Brazil nuts, and dried beans. Studies have shown that cheese may actually neutralize plaque acid, but drinking a glass of milk reduces the level of acid produced by plaque bacteria in the mouth.

Fruit, fiber and vegetables

Eating high-fiber foods promotes saliva flow, which helps build mineral defenses against tooth decay. Good sources of fiber are dried fruits such as dates, raisins and figs and fresh fruits such as bananas, apples and oranges. Other options include greens, such as beans, Brussels sprouts, and chickpeas, along with peanuts, almonds, and bran, which are good sources of fiber. A lot of chewing is involved in eating foods like carrots, apples, and cucumbers, all of which are good for your teeth. Chewing these vegetables acts as a cleansing mechanism and harmful bacteria are removed instead of sitting on the teeth.

Proteins

Protein is an essential building block for growth and is important for strong teeth. Protein sources include lean beef, skinless chicken, and fish. Dry beans, peas and other legumes also contain protein.

Healthy fats

Healthy fats are an important part of an anti-inflammatory diet that promotes oral health. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends choosing heart-healthy fats like olive oil, avocados, and fatty fish (like salmon) that go hand in hand to ensure good oral health.

Drink a lot of water

If you are thirsty, fluoridated mineral water is the best drink to protect your teeth and has many other health benefits. Mineral water is better than drinking sugary drinks, but most mineral waters do not contain fluoride, which prevents tooth decay by making teeth more resistant to acid attacks from plaque bacteria and sugar in the mouth. It also reverses early decay.

Sugarless gum

Chew a sugar-free gum between meals. It stimulates saliva and cleans your teeth while freshening your breath. Saliva contains important elements such as bicarbonate, calcium and phosphate, which not only neutralize plaque acids, but also help repair primary damage and tooth decay.

Regular dental examination

In addition to proper nutrition and regular brushing and flossing, regular dental checkups are an important part of having healthy teeth. When you skip regular dental checkups, you put your teeth and gums at risk.
