When you have sensitive teeth, certain activities such as brushing, eating, and drinking can cause temporary, sharp pain in your teeth. Sensitive teeth are usually the result of tooth enamel wear or tooth root exposure. However, sometimes tooth discomfort is caused by other factors such as cavities, cracked teeth, worn fillings, or gum disease.
If sensitive teeth bother you, see your dentist. He can identify or rule out the underlying causes of your toothache. Depending on the situation, your dentist may recommend:
**Anti-allergic toothpaste**
After several uses, hypoallergenic toothpaste can sometimes help prevent pain associated with sensitive teeth. A variety of over-the-counter products are available. Ask your dentist which product might work best for you.
### fluoride
Your dentist may apply fluoride to sensitive areas of your teeth to strengthen tooth enamel and reduce pain. He may also recommend the use of prescription fluoride at home, which is applied through a custom tray.
#### Desensitization or bonding

You can also be careful when eating or drinking acidic foods and drinks, such as sodas, citrus fruits, and wine, all of which can wear away small amounts of tooth enamel over time. When drinking acidic liquids, use a straw to limit contact with your teeth. After eating or drinking an acidic substance, drink water to balance the acid level in your mouth.
