Root canal: toothache is one of the pains that most people usually experience even once. Toothache can have many reasons. The most common cause of toothache is the spread of tooth decay to the root.
**Steps of root canal treatment**
To perform root canal treatment, the dentist first uses an anesthetic to numb the gum tissue around the tooth. Then it completely removes tooth decay and drains the pulp infection. After the infection of the damaged tooth is completely drained, the germs in the dental canals are removed by the dentist. Then the root of the tooth is completely evacuated.
In order to ensure the complete evacuation of the damaged root, the dentist takes a radiograph (X-ray) of the tooth. Once the evacuation is ensured, it fills the nerve canals with a special material that is compatible with the tooth tissues. Finally, the teeth are filled with composite or amalgam.

Teeth that have been treated in time by a root canal can last for years. This issue depends on how to observe dental and oral hygiene. Also, do not chew food during root canal treatment while your tooth is dressed. This may cause the tooth wall to break or the tooth to become infected.
Tooth decay can have different degrees. If caries spots are seen on tooth enamel and dentin, it does not cause any pain. In this case, our teeth need partial treatment (composite filling), but if the treatment is not done, the decay will spread and the infection will enter the dental pulp (the soft tissue in the center of the tooth) and press on the nerves of the tooth. On the root of the tooth, in addition to the filling and restoration of the tooth, you also need a root canal and root. Since the pressure on the pulp chamber is much higher at night than during the day, the pain caused by reaching this stage of tooth decay is felt more at night than during the day.
**Symptoms that show that tooth decay has reached the nerve and as a result the tooth needs root canal treatment:**
- Severe tooth pain after eating hard foods.
- Sudden and sharp pain in the teeth when eating food, water or drinks that are too cold or too hot.
- Feeling severe pain in the tooth for no reason or long-term toothache with such unbearable pain.
- Black teeth with deep holes on the damaged tooth or even tooth wall decay.
- Patient's toothache in case of touching or hitting the tooth.
- Probability of tooth loosening when decay reaches the root of the tooth.
- Possibility of facial swelling or gum swelling with increasing infection in decayed teeth.
During the first few days after the root canal treatment, due to tooth sensitivity, there may be some pain in the filled tooth, which is completely normal. The toothache will disappear completely within a few days.
### **What happens if the root of the tooth is not treated in time?**
In some cases, the toothache may go away and this may cause people to delay root canal treatment. But this relief is completely temporary and the cause of the infection is too much damage to the tooth. When early root canal treatment is not treated after nerve decay, the infection includes all the nerve canals of the affected tooth.
The infection spreads to the nerve endings and the root of the tooth and in most cases causes an abscess at the end of the root. When an abscess is found, the toothache will be very unbearable. In addition, to treat toothache, dental abscesses must be removed. If it is impossible to drain them, the dentist must pull the affected tooth.
In some cases, the tooth becomes completely infected. Also, the root of the tooth is completely rotten, and as a result, it is impossible to maintain and treat this tooth. Therefore, the dentist advises the patient to pull the decayed tooth before it leads to a cyst and abscess.
