ectopic pregnancy diagnosis
For pregnancy to occur, the ovary must release the egg into the fallopian tube, where it remains for about 24 hours. There it is in contact with a sperm to be fertilized. The fertilized egg stays in the fallopian tube for 3 or 4 days before it goes to the uterus. There, it continues to grow until the birth of the baby.
But if the fertilized egg implants in your fallopian tube or somewhere else in your abdomen, you end up with what you call an ectopic pregnancy. In these cases, the pregnancy cannot continue normally and requires emergency treatment.

ectopic pregnancy symptoms
Most often, an ectopic pregnancy occurs during the first few weeks of pregnancy. You may not even know that you are pregnant and you may not have any symptoms.
Light vaginal bleeding and pelvic pain are usually the first symptoms, but others include:
- Nausea and vomiting with pain
- Severe abdominal cramps
- Pain on one side of the body
- Dizziness or weakness
- Pain in shoulder, neck or rectum
Ectopic pregnancy can lead to fallopian tube rupture. If this happens, you may have severe pain with or without heavy bleeding. Or the bleeding can be internal. Call your doctor right away if you have heavy vaginal bleeding that causes lightheadedness, weakness, or shoulder pain, or if you have severe abdominal pain, especially if it's on one side of the abdomen.
Causes of ectopic pregnancy
You never know why you have an ectopic pregnancy. One of the reasons can be a damaged fallopian tube. This can prevent a fertilized egg from entering your uterus, and allowing it to implant in your fallopian tubes or elsewhere.
But you are more likely to have an ectopic pregnancy if you have any of the following:
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
- Sexual diseases
- Wound caused by previous hip surgeries
- ectopic pregnancy history
- Unsuccessful pipe connection or reversal of pipe closing
- use of fertility drugs
- Infertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF)
- It can also happen if you are pregnant with an intrauterine device (IUD).

ectopic pregnancy diagnosis
If your doctor thinks you have an ectopic pregnancy, he or she will likely do some tests, including a pregnancy test and a pelvic exam. Abdominal ultrasound may be used to observe the state of the uterus and fallopian tubes.
If he confirms that you have an ectopic pregnancy, he will discuss with you the best course of treatment based on your medical conditions and future plans for pregnancy.
