This condition usually starts from the first weeks of pregnancy and may continue until the end of this period. Although frequent urination is often normal and caused by hormonal and physical changes in the body, knowing its causes and characteristics can help mothers spend this period more calmly. Recognizing the difference between normal pregnancy urine frequency and cases that require medical examination plays an important role in maintaining the health of the mother and the fetus.

cause of frequent urination in pregnancy

Urine frequency during pregnancy has various reasons, most of which are natural and related to changes in the mother's body. The most important reasons are:

  • Hormonal changes: In early pregnancy, the increase in the hCG hormone causes more blood flow to the kidneys. This issue increases the functioning of the kidneys and as a result, the volume of urine increases.
  • Enlargement of the uterus: With the growth of the fetus, the uterus enlarges and puts pressure on the bladder. This pressure causes the bladder to fill earlier and feel the need to urinate more, especially in the first and third trimesters of pregnancy.
  • Increasing the volume of blood and body fluids: During pregnancy, the volume of blood in the body increases. Kidneys produce more urine to regulate these extra fluids.
  • Change in the position of the bladder: During pregnancy, the position of the bladder changes a little and becomes more sensitive, that's why even with a small amount of urine, there is a feeling of excretion.
  • Approaching the time of delivery: In the final months, as the fetus's head descends in the pelvis, more pressure is applied to the bladder and the frequency of urination increases.
  • Urinary tract infection (in some cases): If the frequency of urination is accompanied by burning, pain, bad urine odor or fever, it may be a sign of a urinary tract infection and requires medical examination.

time of starting frequency of urination in bardrai

Frequency of urination in pregnancy is one of the symptoms whose onset time may vary from person to person, but it usually has a fairly specific pattern and is seen in most women in certain periods of pregnancy.

starting frequent urination in early pregnancy

In many women, the frequency of urination starts from the very first weeks of pregnancy and usually from around 5 to 8 weeks. At this time, the body undergoes rapid hormonal changes. The increase of hCG hormone and also the increase of progesterone level increases the blood flow to the kidneys. As a result, the kidneys produce more urine and the feeling of needing to urinate will be more than normal. For this reason, frequent urination can be considered one of the early symptoms of pregnancy.

Change of position in the second trimester of pregnancy

When entering the second trimester (from about week 13 to 27), the frequency of urination decreases in many women. During this period, the uterus moves out of the pelvis and upwards, resulting in less pressure on the bladder. For this reason, pregnant mothers usually feel more comfortable during this period, and the frequency of urination is closer to normal, although it may not be completely resolved.

return of urinary frequency in the last months of pregnancy

In the third trimester of pregnancy, especially from around week 28 onwards, the frequency of urination increases again. The rapid growth of the fetus, the enlargement of the uterus and the lowering of the head of the fetus in the pelvis cause direct pressure on the bladder. At this stage, even a small amount of urine can cause a feeling of urgency, and frequent awakenings during the night are also common.

Individual differences in time of onset and intensity

It should be noted that the time of onset and frequency of urination during pregnancy are not the same in all women. Factors such as the number of pregnancies, the strength of the pelvic floor muscles, the condition of the bladder and the amount of fluid consumption can affect this issue.

Urine frequency is a normal part of the pregnancy process in most cases, but if this symptom is accompanied by burning, pain, fever, change in color or abnormal smell of urine, it can be a sign of a urinary tract infection or another problem and should be checked by a doctor.

Home treatment frequent urination during pregnancy

Urine frequency during pregnancy usually cannot be treated completely, because it is a natural part of the changes in the mother's body; But by following some simple and safe home remedies, its severity can be reduced and made more bearable:

  1. Adjust fluid intake: Drinking enough water during the day is essential, but it is better to reduce fluid intake in the late hours of the night to reduce frequent awakenings during sleep. Avoid complete removal of liquids, because dehydration is harmful to the mother and fetus.
  2. Empty the bladder completely: Do not rush when urinating and try to empty the bladder completely. You can lean forward a little to make emptying better and reduce residual urine.
  3. Avoid substances that irritate the bladder: Drinks such as strong tea, coffee, carbonated drinks and chocolate can irritate the bladder and increase the frequency of urination. Reducing the consumption of these substances is helpful.
  4. Performing pelvic floor exercises (Kegel): Kegel exercises strengthen the pelvic floor muscles and help control the bladder better. Doing these exercises regularly during pregnancy can reduce both urinary frequency and incontinence.
  5. Prevention of constipation: Constipation increases the pressure on the bladder. Consuming high-fiber foods such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains as well as moderate daily movement can prevent constipation.
  6. Emptying the bladder before going to bed and leaving the house: Be sure to empty your bladder before going to bed at night or leaving the house to reduce the feeling of sudden urination.
  7. Maintain proper body temperature: Cold can irritate the bladder. Wearing warm clothes and preventing the abdomen and pelvis from getting cold helps to reduce the feeling of frequent urination.
  8. Regarding genital area hygiene: Proper hygiene prevents the occurrence of urinary tract infection, because the infection can increase the frequency of urination.

If the frequency of urination is accompanied by burning, pain, fever, feeling of intense pressure, or changes in the color and smell of urine, home treatment is not enough and it is necessary to see a doctor.

How long does frequency of urination in pregnancy last?

Urinary frequency in pregnancy usually starts from the beginning of pregnancy and may continue until the end of this period. In the first trimester, due to hormonal changes, this condition is more common. In the second trimester, as the uterus rises and the pressure on the bladder decreases, the frequency of urination decreases or temporarily stops in many women. But in the last months of pregnancy, with the growth of the fetus and more pressure on the bladder, the frequency of urination increases again and usually continues until delivery.

After giving birth, in most cases, this problem gradually resolves within a few days to a few weeks. If the frequency of urination continues after delivery or is accompanied by burning and pain, it is better to see a doctor.

Is frequent urination dangerous in pregnancy?

Urine frequency during pregnancy is not dangerous in most cases and is considered one of the normal changes of this period. This state is usually caused by hormonal changes, increased volume of body fluids and the pressure of the uterus on the bladder, and it does not harm the mother or the fetus by itself.

However, in some situations, it is necessary to pay more attention to it. If the frequency of urination is accompanied by symptoms such as burning, pain during urination, fever, a feeling of intense pressure, or a change in the color and smell of urine, it may be a sign of a urinary tract infection or another problem that requires medical examination and treatment. Urinary tract infections in pregnancy, if not treated, can be dangerous for the mother and the fetus.

Frequency of simple urination without unusual symptoms is usually nothing to worry about, but it is very important to pay attention to the warning signs and see a doctor if you see them.

final speech

In the end, it should be said that frequent urination during pregnancy is one of the normal and common changes during pregnancy, which is often nothing to worry about. This condition is mostly caused by hormonal changes, increased blood flow and uterine pressure on the bladder and can be managed with the passage of time and following simple home tips. However, it is especially important to pay attention to abnormal symptoms such as burning, pain, fever, or changes in the color or smell of urine, as they can be a sign of infection or another problem that requires medical attention. Knowing and following simple tips ensures the mother's comfort and the health of the fetus and makes the pregnancy experience easier and safer.
