One of the common injuries among athletes is knee injuries in sports, which can be caused by direct impact, sudden rotation, overuse or mistakes in movement techniques. Physiotherapy plays a vital role in the treatment and recovery of these injuries. Next, we will examine the types of knee injuries in sports and the role of physiotherapy in their treatment:

1- Injury of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL):

A serious injury that usually occurs in dynamic sports such as football, basketball or skiing. This injury causes instability of the knee and limits movement.

2- Posterior cruciate ligament damage : (PCL)

In active sports and in case of twisting of the knee during movement, a strong blow from the back, and previous instabilities of the knee due to various causes of this injury.

3-median ligament injury (MCL):

It is often caused by a lateral impact to the knee and can lead to swelling and chronic pain.

4- Damage to the lateral collateral ligament(LCL)

Injury of this ligament happens less often, but it happens in severe injuries.

5-meniscus tear:

Menisci act as shock absorbing cushions. Their rupture or injury causes pain, swelling and a decrease in the range of motion of the knee.

6- knee joint pain syndrome (patellofemoral):

It is usually seen in repetitive motion sports such as marathon running or cycling and is caused by constant pressure on the knee.

The role of physiotherapy in the treatment of knee injuries

Physiotherapy aims to restore the normal function of the knee, reduce pain, prevent re-injury and complete rehabilitation and return to sports, among the main tools in the recovery process. Some of the methods used are:

1) strengthening and stretching exercises:

According to a precise and regulated protocol, strengthening the muscles around the knee (such as the quadriceps and hamstrings) helps to structurally support the knee.

Stretching exercises also increase joint flexibility and reduce stiffness, which should be done in the open and closed range of motion.

2) manual treatments and massage:

These methods help to reduce muscle tension, restore range of motion, improve blood flow and facilitate the recovery of damaged tissues.

3) Using therapeutic modalities:

Pain stimulators, ice therapy, laser therapy, ultrasound therapy and phonophoresis, anti-inflammatory and restorative creams, Vasotrin and vacuotherapy...

4) Using aids:

Pressure bandages, support braces, use of special splints, use of crutches and ice therapy can reduce swelling and pain and speed up the healing process.

5) Balance and proprioceptive exercises:

These exercises help improve balance and muscle coordination, which is vital to prevent re-injury. These exercises are very effective in rehabilitating the injured limb and returning to specialized sports.

6) Individualized training program:

Every athlete and every injury needs a treatment plan tailored to their specific conditions. Consultation with physiotherapists is recommended to set up a suitable program.

Prevention of knee injury

Proper warm-up:

Performing warm-up exercises before starting sports activities to prepare muscles and joints.

Teaching correct techniques:

Getting familiar with the correct methods of doing sports helps to reduce unnecessary pressure on the knee.

Regular strengthening exercises:

Strengthening the muscles supporting the knee to increase stability and reduce the risk of acute injuries.

Rest and recovery:

Pay attention to adequate rest periods after training or competition to prevent fatigue and overuse injuries.

Conclusion

Knee injuries in sports can have significant effects on sports performance. However, with timely diagnosis, use of appropriate physiotherapy methods and adherence to preventive measures, serious injuries can be prevented and the recovery process can be accelerated in case of injury. Close cooperation with sports specialists and physiotherapists is of particular importance to tailor a program tailored to individual needs and ensure a safe return to sports activities.
