A vaginal speculum is a medical instrument used to examine the vagina and cervix during women's examinations. A speculum is usually made of stainless steel or plastic and has two blades that are gently inserted into the vagina to keep it open.
The speculum allows doctors to see and examine the cervix, take samples for Pap smear tests and other procedures. such as inserting an IUD. The speculum can be uncomfortable for some women or pain , but is generally considered safe when used by a gynecologist.
