Ankle sprains are one of the most common sports injuries and everyday occurrences that can be caused by stretching or tearing the ligaments around the ankle. This injury usually occurs as a result of sudden twisting of the leg, falling or intense physical activities. Fortunately, most of the time, this complication improves by itself without the need for treatment. You can prevent this complication by strengthening the injured muscles. What are the symptoms of sprained ankle? Ankle sprains can occur with different severities, and its symptoms depend on the extent of the injury. Common symptoms include: - Severe ankle pain, especially when standing or moving the leg - Swelling around the ankle due to fluid accumulation in the affected area - Bruising or discoloration of the skin around the ankle - Difficulty in moving the ankle or bearing the weight of the body on it - Pain or discomfort when touching the affected area - Feeling of ankle instability or looseness, especially in severe sprains Types of torsion Sprains are classified into three groups: grade 1 (mild) Mild stretching of ligaments occurs without tearing and is usually accompanied by swelling and some pain. grade 2 (medium) Partial tear of ligaments in the 2nd degree, which causes moderate pain, more swelling than the previous case, and reduced mobility. grade 3 (severe) In this case, a complete rupture of the ligaments occurs, which causes severe pain, extensive swelling and instability of the ankle. Ankle sprains usually occur due to the following conditions: - While performing sudden or unexpected movements such as running or jumping - Falling or slipping on a slippery or uneven surface - Dynamic sports that require quick changes in direction of movement, such as football, basketball or tennis - Weakness or low flexibility in the muscles and ligaments around the ankle - Using inappropriate shoes - History of twisting How is it diagnosed? First, the doctor evaluates the amount of pain, swelling and sensitivity to touch by examining the injured area. Ankle movement and range of motion are also checked. The doctor asks the patient about how the injury occurred, the severity of the pain and other symptoms. If needed, imaging methods are also used. For example, X-rays are used to check for possible fractures in the ankle bones. In more severe cases or suspected complete rupture of ligaments, MRI is used for more detailed observation of soft tissues. Sometimes ultrasound is also used to check the condition of the ligaments and the level of inflammation. When should you see a doctor? The times when you need to see a doctor are as follows: - You have severe or unbearable pain. - There is excessive or persistent swelling. - The ankle seems unstable. - You are not able to bear the weight of your body on your leg. - You have signs of infection such as redness, warmth or fever. - Symptoms do not improve or worsen after several days of home treatment. To treat sports injuries, you can refer to a pain specialist. What are the treatment methods? The treatment method depends on the severity of the injury and includes the following methods: ### RICE method - You should rest and avoid activities that put pressure on the ankle. - Using ice every 2-3 hours for 20 minutes on the affected area helps reduce swelling. - Wrapping the ankle with a bandage helps reduce swelling. - It is recommended to place the foot at a level higher than the heart to reduce swelling. ### Medicines Taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs reduces pain and inflammation. You should see a doctor for the best medicine for sprained ankles. ### Physiotherapy Physiotherapy exercises are recommended to restore movement, strengthen muscles and improve ankle balance. ### Use of auxiliary equipment In moderate or severe cases, the use of a splint or brace may be recommended to improve ankle sprains. ### Surgery In rare cases and severe sprains (grade 3) where the ligaments are completely torn, the patient will need surgery. Treating sprained feet with turmeric Due to its natural anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric helps reduce pain and swelling caused by sprained feet. Local application of turmeric paste (a mixture of turmeric powder with a little water or oil) on the affected area is one of the simple and traditional methods. Also, drinking turmeric milk during recovery can help the general recovery of the body. Of course, these methods are complementary to medical treatments and not a substitute for them. Quick treatment for ankle sprains To quickly reduce the pain and swelling caused by ankle sprains, the R.I.C.E method is recommended: Rest: You should not put pressure on your leg. - Ice: put on the wrist for 15 to 20 minutes every 2 to 3 hours. - Compression: Keep the wrist closed with a bandage to prevent further swelling. - Keeping the leg elevated (Elevation): placing the leg above the level of the heart helps to reduce swelling. The simultaneous use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as ibuprofen prescribed by a doctor) and in some cases, the use of herbal remedies such as turmeric paste, accelerates the healing process. If the injury is severe or the symptoms persist, be sure to see a doctor. How many days does a sprained ankle last? The duration of recovery depends on the severity of the injury; But in general: - Mild sprain (grade 1): about 3 to 7 days - Moderate sprain (grade 2): between 1 and 3 weeks - Severe sprain (grade 3): may last 4 to 6 weeks or more Resting, using ice, compression bandages and keeping the leg elevated can help speed up the healing process. If the pain or swelling lasts more than a few days, it is necessary to see a doctor.
