What is heart bypass surgery?

Imagine you are on a freeway....an accident causes traffic ahead....paramedics guide cars around the jam....you can finally get back on the road and the route is clear.

If you need heart bypass surgery, the process is very similar..the surgeon takes blood vessels from another part of the body to bypass or bypass the blocked artery..the result is that more blood and oxygen can get back into your heart.

This method can help reduce the risk of heart attack and other problems.... After recovery, you will feel better and can return to your daily activities.

Bypass surgery, also known as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), is the most common open heart surgery in the United States. Most people have good outcomes and live symptom-free for decades.

Why should heart bypass surgery be performed?

Bypass surgery treats the symptoms of coronary heart disease. This happens when a waxy substance called plaque builds up inside the arteries of the heart, preventing blood and oxygen from reaching it. You may feel the following:

  • chest pain, known as angina
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • shortness of breath

Coronary heart disease can lead to a heart attack....this can cause blood clots and cut off blood flow....Bypass surgery can play an important role in improving your health.

How is this process done?

The surgeon takes a blood vessel called a graft from another part of the body, such as the chest, leg, or arm. He attaches one end to the aorta, the largest artery that leaves the heart. Then he attaches the other end to the artery below the blockage.

Transplant creates a new path for blood to reach the heart.... If there are multiple blockages, the surgeon may perform one or more bypasses during the same surgery.

You will be asleep the entire time, which lasts about 3 to 6 hours.

What happens after the operation?

You wake up in the intensive care unit (ICU)....a tube will be put in your mouth to help you breathe....you won't be able to talk and you will feel uncomfortable....nurses will be there to help you....they will remove the tube after a few hours when you can breathe on your own.

You will also be connected to machines around the clock that monitor your vital signs, such as your heart rate and blood pressure.. You will stay in the intensive care unit for a few days before being transferred to a hospital room....You will stay there for about 3-5 days before going home.

What will the recovery period be like?

This is a gradual process....you may feel worse after the operation than before....this is normal....your body needs time to heal, but you will get better every day.

You won't fully recover for about 2 months... Be sure to follow your doctor's instructions.

You may not be able to drive for 3 to 8 weeks.

During the first few months, you will need to see your doctor several times to check your recovery..

What are the risks of heart bypass surgery?

All surgeries have problems....some possible ones are:

  • Fever
  • Irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia)
  • kidney problems
  • Infection and bleeding at the cut site
  • memory loss
  • Pain
  • Reaction to anesthesia
  • Heart attack

Once you recover, your angina symptoms will go away or get better.. you will be able to be more active and you will be less likely to have a heart attack... Best of all, this surgery can add years to your life.
