What is Crossbyte

?

Crossbite is a type of tooth deviation in which when the bite is closed, the upper and lower teeth do not contact each other in the right place. In fact, it occurs when the teeth of the upper jaw are inside the teeth of the lower jaw. The result of this problem will be an asymmetrical and crooked appearance.

Usually dentists and orthodontists can diagnose this problem at a young age of the patient. They probably think it needs to be treated. Because if left untreated, it can lead to jaw deviation and many oral health problems. Several causes can lead to crossbite, including genetic factors, depression and misalignment of teeth, and behavioral factors such as finger or thumb sucking. Since cross bite can occur for various reasons, several terms are used to name them.

Types of crossbite

These conditions can be classified in different ways based on the number of teeth involved.

Front
An anterior crossbite, also known as an underbite, affects the front of the mouth. This means that the front teeth of the upper jaw are behind the front teeth of the lower jaw.

Back

Unlike the anterior, the posterior crossbite affects the teeth in the back of the mouth. The causes of these two types of cross are similar to the causes that affect the front teeth. Another reason can be the late fall of milk teeth and the growth of permanent teeth to replace it in the wrong direction.
Bacal
The buccal part of the mouth is the part close to the neck. External appearance of teeth. Buccal crossbite refers to teeth that are too far towards the cheeks. If your tongue can feel the chewing surface of the inner teeth while the mouth is closed, it can be said that you are facing this problem.

Lingual

Lingual is the opposite of buccal crossbite. This means that the teeth are placed inside and facing the tongue. Again, if you can feel the chewing surface of your inner teeth with your tongue normally with your mouth closed, you have a crossbite.

one-way and two-way

A diagnosis of bilateral crossbite means that both sides of the mouth are affected. While in unilateral crossbite, one side of the mouth is affected. Two-way crossbite occurs more often than one-way crossbite. The treatment you receive is likely to be similar for both of these problems. But the mechanism that the orthodontist does may be a little different.
one tooth or several teeth
These terms are a bit easier to understand. Unilateral crossbite affects only one tooth. This happens when only one tooth in the lower jaw is in front of the tooth in front of the upper jaw, or when a tooth in the upper jaw is deviated towards the inside of the mouth. A multi-tooth crossbite means that some, but not all, of the teeth are misaligned. It usually affects two or three teeth in one dental arch. It makes them deviate towards the cheek, or towards the tongue.

Cross bite treatment

Orthodontists call these conditions by different names. But in most cases, the treatment options are similar. The treatment of crossbite teeth is better to start in childhood. When teeth and bones move more easily because they are not yet fixed in place.

There is evidence that if treatment with braces is started early, it can be up to 80% effective without the need for any other treatment.

Treatment with orthodontics

One of the most common ways of treatment is the use of braces. The orthodontist can explain the exact treatment you need. In the most common type of braces that are used for treatment, a palate expander is used. An instrument that works to widen the upper jaw so that the upper teeth are properly positioned in and out of the lower jaw. The palatal expander needs to be adjusted regularly at short intervals to space the teeth apart. There is also a quick enlargement method that can achieve the right results within a few months. After the plate (palate) has expanded to the correct size, the teeth may need to be straightened further. There are different types of braces that can be used for this purpose. To continue treatment after braces are used, retainers will be needed to help keep the teeth in place.

Treatment without braces

You may want to know if you need braces for a shave. Not everyone may want to use fixed metal braces. Fortunately, there are alternatives that can be just as effective as braces, including invisible aligner braces or clear braces. You should know that anything other than metal braces requires private treatment. It is possible that the posterior crossbite can be treated only with elastics.

Is invisiline able to cure?

For patients with a mild anterior or posterior crossbite, Invisalign clear aligner braces can be an effective treatment. This system has the advantage of being almost invisible. In addition, they have the advantage that removing the aligner for two hours a day can be done easily. This treatment can be helpful if you still have a crossbite after wearing braces. Another type of clear aligners that can correct a crossbite is SmileDirectClub, which does not require an orthodontist for adjustment. Some people prefer to use them over Invisalign because they are cheaper and more convenient. However, keep in mind that these aligners are only useful for mild cases.

Crossbite correction and treatment with elastics

Crossbite of the teeth in the back of the mouth can be treated with posterior crossbite elastics. This treatment is performed by a dentist by attaching hooks to the inside of the upper jaw teeth and the outside of the lower jaw teeth and by connecting them with an elastic band. The point of this treatment is that the back teeth of the upper jaw are pulled out so that they easily cover the teeth of the lower jaw. This is a relatively simple process that can take three to four months.

Jaw surgery

In more severe cases, surgery may be needed. Having surgery can be an unpleasant and worrying experience, but it is a fairly common procedure. In cases where surgery is medically necessary, the maxillofacial surgeon can easily perform this task in close cooperation with the orthodontist. Cross bite surgery normally takes about 8 months to a year. If wisdom teeth are present, they may need to be extracted. This is necessary, because the surgery that is performed to treat and correct jaw asymmetry is performed at the back of the mouth. In jaw straightening surgery, for children and adults, the jaw is broken and its location is changed. When this step is complete, the surgeon fixes it in place with screws and plates. All incisions are made inside the mouth so that no visible scars are left outside the mouth. Crossbite surgical recovery takes three steps. For the first three days, it is necessary to take a liquid diet. After that, it takes about 6 weeks for partial recovery and 12 weeks for complete recovery. Braces used for crossbite often need to be worn for more than 4 to 6 months. If you are afraid of doing this surgery, you can ask your surgeon to show you the pictures of the surgeries he has done before for the treatment of crossbite.
What problems does cross-byte lead to?
Crossbite can't seem like a big cosmetic problem. But not receiving the correct treatment can cause the problems to pile on each other until adulthood. Anterior and posterior crossbites can lead to major problems, including:
  • Increasing the risk of tooth decay.
  • Gum disease.
  • Severe wear of gums and teeth.
  • Increasing the possibility of squeezing and grinding teeth on each other or grinding teeth (bruxism).
  • biting inside the cheeks while eating.
  • Increasing the possibility of headache as a result of pressure.
  • jaw asymmetry
Due to the dangers of not treating crossbite, if you notice crossbite in your children's teeth, you should talk to an orthodontist about treating it.
