All about eye vitrectomy surgery

This is a type of eye surgery.... The best ophthalmologist removes the vitreous, which is a jelly-like liquid inside the eye, and replaces it with a saline solution.

Why is vitrectomy surgery performed?...

In order to see, light must pass through the eye and reach the retina, which is a group of light-sensitive tissues located at the back of the eye. The retina sends information to the brain.

Various eye diseases can cause the vitreous fluid to become cloudy, filled with blood or debris, hardened, or scarred. This can block light from reaching the retina and cause visual impairment. Removal and replacement of the fluid may resolve or improve this problem.

Sometimes the retina is separated from the tissue around it. The doctor can perform vitrectomy surgery to facilitate access to the retina and repair it.

Additionally, this procedure can allow the doctor access to the macula, which is located in the center of the retina and provides accurate central vision.

A hole in it can lead to blurred vision... This is easier to fix by removing the vitreous fluid.

Some other problems that vitrectomy can treat are:

  • Damage of blood vessels located in the retina of the eye
  • infections inside the eye
  • Serious eye injuries
  • retinal wrinkles (macular wrinkles)

The doctor may also suggest a method to treat specific problems after cataract surgery.

Before vitrectomy surgery

If you need to take special steps to prepare, your ophthalmologist (eye specialist) can suggest them... You can ask your doctor about the following:

  • Is it necessary to stop taking some medications?
  • Should eating and drinking be avoided before surgery, and if so, for how long?
  • What are the anesthesia options?
  • How long do you expect the surgery to take?

The doctor will probably re-examine your eyes using special tools and lights before surgery....he may need to dilate your eyes.. They may want to do an ultrasound on the eyes to check the retina more closely.

During vitrectomy operation

Depending on the patient being operated on, vitrectomy may take anywhere from one to several hours.. This procedure may be just one of a series of procedures to correct the problem.. You may stay awake and receive numbing drops or injections in your eye..

To perform this procedure, an ophthalmologist:

  • It creates a cut in the outer layer of the eye
  • It cuts off the white part of the eye called the sclera
  • He removes the vitreous fluid using a microscopic cutting tool (while the eye is filled with a fluid similar to normal eye fluid)
  • Remove any scar tissue or residue from the eye

Once the fluid is removed, the doctor will do any other repairs to the eye that are needed....Then the eyes are filled with saline solution....If the doctor uses silicone oil instead, surgery will be needed to remove it later....Stitches may be used to close the incision, but most people don't need them....The doctor will apply antibiotic ointment to the eye and cover it with a patch.

How is the recovery process after vitrectomy?

Arrange to have someone drive you home after surgery.

The doctor will prescribe antibiotic drops to help prevent eye infections... If you feel pain in your eyes, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers.... The doctor will check your eyes after surgery... This follow-up may be done the day after the operation.

What are the risks of vitrectomy surgery?

Vitrectomy surgeries are usually successful... Complications are rare... Your outcome will depend on the condition of your eye and what needs to be done to repair it... However, every surgery still comes with its own potential risks and complications... After vitrectomy surgery, there is a possibility of the following:

  • Cataract
  • Increased intraocular pressure
  • More bleeding in the vitreous
  • retinal detachment
  • infection
  • Problems in eye movement

You can call a doctor if the following occur:

  • Your vision is failing
  • You have severe pain, swelling or redness around the eyes
  • You have discharge from your eyes
  • You see floating structures or flashing lights

These can be signs of more serious problems that should be examined and treated by a doctor.
