Please read the disclaimer at the bottom of this page....Dengue fever is an infection caused by one of 4 viruses called "dengue viruses"....they are related but not exactly the same....getting sick from 1 dengue virus does not protect you from getting the others....a person can get dengue fever more than once....dengue fever is transmitted by mosquitoes that live in areas where these mosquitoes live Dengue virus is common....are, have the highest risk....These areas include South Asia, Central and South America, and the Caribbean....What are the symptoms of dengue fever?...Symptoms usually occur 4 to 7 days after being bitten by a mosquito that carries the dengue virus....but may occur up to 2 weeks later....Symptoms usually last 5 to 7 days from a person with dengue fever or severe dengue fever....They can include: fever ● Headache Pain behind the eyes ● Joint and muscle pain Feeling tired, sometimes for days to weeks ● Rash – may be smooth or have small bumps....may be itchy..rash more common in people who have not been exposed to dengue virus before..cough, sore throat and stuffy nose – throat may appear red...small purple spots on skin or bowel movements that appear black...red eyes Swollen glands in children and younger people often have less severe symptoms. People who have had dengue fever in the past and have been infected with another dengue virus are at the highest risk of developing severe symptoms.** A person with severe dengue fever may:** Have severe abdominal pain Get bruised without hitting anything – the person may have small purple spots on the skin...vomiting blood...nosebleeds ● Have black stools ● Have a seizure – A person having a seizure may pass out or move or act strangely.... For example, they may shake or fall.... ● Bleeding between periods (in women) Should I see a doctor?.. - Yes.... If you live in a country where dengue fever is common, see a doctor if you have any of the symptoms.... If you have lived in a country where dengue is common and you have recently returned for a visit, see a doctor if you have symptoms of dengue fever....you may have been infected while living there and reinfected during your visit....People who travel frequently to these countries should also be tested for dengue fever symptoms....yes...a doctor can tell if you have dengue fever by examining and knowing the symptoms....he can also do a blood test. These tests can show if you have dengue fever or another disease that causes similar symptoms like Zika virus infection... In countries where dengue fever is common, you may not do blood tests... but if doctors think you have it, they can still treat dengue fever.... **How is it treated*?. There is no cure for the virus that causes dengue, but doctors can treat the symptoms....very sick people can be treated in hospital.... **Treatments include:** Blood transfusion - If the infection is causing severe bleeding, doctors can give the person blood that someone else gave in the hospital. Fluids are given through a thin tube that goes into a vein called an IV. Babies elderly people ● Obese people People with diabetes, kidney failure, or certain blood diseases may need to go to the hospital if they get dengue fever. Doctors can monitor for severe symptoms and treat them if they occur. People who live alone or far from a doctor's office or hospital may also need to stay in the hospital. That way, if they get very sick, they can be treated right away. review do....these tests are important because dengue fever can cause serious bleeding...doctors can check if this happens and treat it sooner if it does....is there anything i can do on my own to feel better?. - Yes.... Prevent fever?. - Yes....the best way to prevent dengue fever is to avoid mosquitoes that carry dengue fever....Not all countries where dengue fever is prevalent have good mosquito control....but if you live or travel there, you can reduce your chances of getting dengue fever....you can: Stay indoors during the day when dengue-carrying mosquitoes are most active.. Buildings with mosquito nets and air conditioning are safest... A chemical called permethrin.... ●Drain any standing water near your home such as pools, buckets, and potted plants.... Mosquitoes are not available in some parts of the world..
