The gynecologist can prescribe a serum progesterone test to measure the level of progesterone in the blood.

Progesterone is one of the hormones produced in the body. Both women and men produce this hormone.. but it is mostly produced in the ovaries, which means that women have more of it.

Test Progesterone (progesterone)Serum What is it?

Doctors may request a serum progesterone test despite difficulty in getting pregnant. The results can indicate whether or not ovulation has occurred. A serum progesterone test, in turn, can help diagnose and manage potential fertility problems.

If you are pregnant and are at risk of an ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage, your doctor may request a serum progesterone test... An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg attaches itself to the fallopian tube, abdominal cavity, or cervix... Both of these conditions cause low progesterone levels.

How to prepare for the serum progesterone test

To perform a serum progesterone test, after taking a blood sample, the doctor sends it to the laboratory.

You may be asked to take certain steps to prepare for a serum progesterone test....for example, you should tell your doctor about any medications you are taking.. Some medications, such as birth control pills and progesterone supplements, can affect serum progesterone test results.

Some medications, such as blood thinners, can also increase the risk of complications from blood sampling. Your doctor may ask you to stop taking certain medications before the blood draw.

You will probably have some pain when the needle is inserted into the vein....and you may bleed for a few minutes after the needle is removed....there may also be bruising around the area where the blood was drawn.

More serious complications are rare... these include fainting, inflammation of the vein, and infection at the site of blood collection... If you have a bleeding disorder, the risks of bleeding are greater.
