The cause of dental implant loosening =====================================
Dental implant loosening/ Ideally, dental implants should stay nice and tight. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Your dentist can help you make sure your loose dental implant is fixed before it falls out or leads to life-threatening problems. For this reason, it is necessary to consult when a problem occurs.
**Symptoms of dental implant loosening**
Often the patient can recognize on his own that part of the prosthesis is loose. Touching it with your tongue or fingers may be enough to diagnose the problem. To prevent further damage, it is essential to contact a dentist immediately.
**Symptoms of dental implant loosening are:**
- Denture movement - Pain, especially when chewing - recessed gums - bleeding when touched - Color change in the affected area - falling of the tooth cap
If you notice these symptoms and report them to your dentist, he will likely take x-rays. A clinical examination will then reveal which part is moving, as it may not be the implant itself.
Most often, it is the abutment or crown that is loose. This is good news, as it may not be necessary to remove the entire implant fixture from the bone. However, all movement with an implant is bad and should be dealt with as soon as possible.
In cases where an implant supports two or more crowns or even a single denture, diagnosis and treatment may be more difficult.
### **Causes of dental implant loosening**
Some problems may develop soon after placement or during the recovery period, while others may become apparent years later.
- Overheating during the operation - Non-ideal placement - Complex wound treatment - Insufficient stability - initial overload - Absence of implant torque
**The factors that appear late are**
- Lack of bone integrity - infection - Biomechanical overload - Faulty implant or component design - gum disease
How to deal with the problem depends on the element that is affected. This can be a crown, abutment or implant. Loose and untreated any of these parts can lead to the failure of the implant as well as complications for the whole body. Abutment is a piece that joins the implant and the tooth cap (crown). This is the part that loosens most often and accounts for 33% of cases. It is often painless and can usually be removed without causing further damage to the rod or crown.
Abutments usually loosen due to impact, faulty designs, or overload. The last can also be associated with incorrect placement of the rod. This may require removal of the implant.
**Treatment**
Ideally, the abutment should be removed along with the crown and then it can be removed outside the mouth. This includes unscrewing the prosthesis. Tooth caps can be saved and reduce your costs. Sometimes it is not possible to remove the abutment without damaging the crown. In such cases, it may be necessary to cut or drill it. Your dentist can try to get an original cast from the lab that made it, or make a new cast.
You may have to use a temporary restoration for a few weeks.
##### **Easiest fix: loose dental implant crown**
The crown is the part of the restoration that is visible in the mouth. It can be made of several different materials, the most common of which is porcelain.
A loose implant crown is caused by trauma and fracture. These can be caused by teeth grinding and injuries. If it is moving, there is probably a crack in the cap itself or the cement that holds it in place.
**Treatment**
Treatment for a loose dental implant crown is similar to a damaged abutment. If possible, it will be unscrewed. Otherwise, the crown may be extracted, provided the cementum is sufficiently brittle to allow this. Otherwise, it is cut into smaller pieces. The abutment or rod is then thoroughly cleaned.
If the dental implant crown has completely fallen out, but is still in good shape, it can be cemented into place. This is a simple procedure and may not require anesthesia.
The situation becomes more complicated if the crown is damaged. The dentist can try to retrieve a cast that has already been taken or make a new cast.
Bonded crowns sometimes loosen, leading to loosening of the crown or abutment. This problem is very easy to reattach.
**Worst case scenario: dental implant loosening**
The biggest problem appears when there is something wrong with the implant itself. There may be pain, numbness in the lips and even inflammation in the gums.
These symptoms appear when there is a dental implant infection. Ignoring them can lead to severe complications. You should see a dentist as soon as possible.
The most common cause of implant loosening is infection with bone loss. It can also be caused by impact or excessive pressure. The first can be caused by poor oral hygiene, smoking, and certain medications. The second case is the faulty or non-ideal placement of the implant.
**Treatment**
Loose dental implants always require complete removal. If there is bone loss, you may need a graft. This includes additional months of recovery. The next step is to try again for dental implants or placing dentures. The dentist will discuss the options with you. If you do not need a graft, you may immediately install a larger implant. In this way, there is still a chance of successful osseous integration after removal. However, infection or periodontitis should not be present.
It may be possible to reuse the crown, which can save significant costs. The removal process still requires appropriate follow-up care, possibly antibiotics and pain relievers. **Click to book an appointment online!!!!**
