After scheduling your ankle replacement surgery, there are steps to be taken to ensure the procedure goes smoothly. First, make several appointments with your doctors to plan and prepare:

Primary care doctor....it's best to do a physical exam to make sure you're healthy enough to have surgery....this is especially important if you have a long-term condition like diabetes.

Before ankle replacement surgery

Physiotherapist

The physical therapist will measure your ankle function before surgery. This will help him monitor your progress as the joint heals and resume movement. He can also teach you how to use a cane or walker that you may need to get around after surgery.

Anesthesiologist

He is the doctor who will keep you pain free during surgery.... You will usually have an appointment with him on the day of the operation.... He will explain the type of anesthesia that will be used for you and ask you about any bad reactions you have had in the past.

You may need to take steps to help you heal faster:

If you smoke, stop...it damages your heart and blood vessels and prolongs your recovery time.

Changing medications... If you are taking blood thinners or anticoagulants, your doctor and orthopedist will discuss with you when to stop using them before surgery... These medications include anti-inflammatory pain relievers such as aspirin and ibuprofen... If these medications are taken close to the time of surgery, they can cause more bleeding.>

Inform your surgeon about other prescription and over-the-counter medications you are taking. They may need to be temporarily stopped or changed.

Watch out for illness... If you get sick or have symptoms of an infection in the week before surgery, tell your orthopedic doctor right away.

Keep yourself clean.... Follow the instructions given to you about showering or washing before surgery.... Your surgeon may want you to wash with a special soap that kills bacteria on the skin.

Prepare your home for recovery

After surgery, you won't be able to move for a while... Before you go to the hospital, you can make your home a safe place to recover by following these tips:

Prepare for "one-story" living....if you have a multi-story home, arrange to stay on the first floor while you recover so you don't have to climb stairs....this may include moving furniture to get ready for bed.

Get rid of trip hazards... remove rugs and move wires or other obstacles on the floor.

Make some changes in the bathroom....place a chair in the tub or shower so you can shower safely.

Keep the essentials within reach....Across the house, keep everything you use often within easy reach....put them in places where you don't have to bend over to reach them.

Arrange for help....make sure someone is with you for at least the first few days after the operation....you will need to rest your feet and keep your ankles elevated....the surgeon will tell you how long.

Go to the hospital

Avoid eating food or liquids after midnight the night before the procedure.

Don't carry makeup or jewelry with you when you go to the hospital...Also, pack a small bag to carry with you....Your surgeon may give you a list of suggested items to bring. These items include:

  • Insurance information
  • A copy of your medical history and previous procedures
  • Medications you take regularly
  • Personal care tools such as toothbrush and comb
  • Comfortable clothes to wear around the house, such as shorts or pants that are too loose around the ankles
