How long does a dental implant last and what are its effective factors?

Table of contents

How long does a dental implant last? Generally, the period of dental implant implantation varies between 2 to 12 months, which depends on the patient's conditions and the type of implant, and usually the period of fusion of the implant with the jawbone takes about 3 to 6 months. The immediate implant provides the possibility of installing the temporary base and cover in one session; But it still takes a few months for complete welding.

Time table of dental implant implantation steps

Step brief description Approximate duration Examination, consultation, imaging and review of medical records General health assessment, x-rays 30 minutes to 1 hour Extracting the damaged tooth Tooth extraction by a dentist (simple or surgical) 10 minutes to 1 hour Recovery period after tooth extraction Early wound healing, preparing for the next step A few days to a few weeks (approximately 2-6 weeks) Bone regeneration or grafting If there is not enough jawbone, a bone graft is performed 3 to 6 months (may take up to 9 months or even 1 year) Planting a fixture or implant base Surgery to place the base of the implant in the jaw bone 1 to 2 hours for surgery, followed by an initial recovery of 7 to 10 days healing period and osteointegration (bone fusion) Welding of the implant base to the jaw bone 3 to 6 months Installation of interface or abutment and temporary cover Placing the connecting part of the abutment and the temporary cover Abutment installation: less than 1 hour, gum healing 2 to 6 weeks Molding and making dental veneers or crowns Molding teeth and making veneers in the laboratory Molding: 30 to 60 minutes (usually in 1 session), veneer making: 1 to 3 weeks Installation of abutment and permanent cover or implant crown Putting the final cover on the implant 1 session, usually up to 1 hour

How long does the dental implant procedure take?

Planting dental implants has different stages, each of which requires a certain amount of time to be done. We will explain the process of each stage of implant planting and the duration of each one.

Initial examination and consultation

At first, the dentist should read all your medical records, make sure of the health status of your teeth and jaw bone, and make sure whether the implant can be done for you. Then he should take pictures of your teeth and jawbone using an X-ray or CT scan machine. Usually, this stage of implant implantation takes 1 to 3 sessions or more, and each session takes approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Pulling the damaged tooth

If the place of the tooth that you want to implant is not empty and there is a damaged tooth in that area, that tooth must be extracted, which usually takes about 15 minutes to 30 minutes in one session, but a minimum period of 2 to 4 weeks must be spent to heal the tissues around the extracted tooth.

Bone reconstruction or grafting

This step is done if the jawbone in which the implant is to be implanted is not strong enough and is weak for the base of the implant. In this case, jaw bone graft surgery should be performed. Usually, the duration of bone grafting for implants is between 1 and 2 hours and is done in one session. Of course, at least 3 to 6 months should pass for complete recovery and fusion of the newly transplanted bone.

fixture planting or implant base

This is the time when the base of the implant or its fixture should be planted in the jawbone. This surgery usually takes between 30 minutes and 2 hours, but the number of implants and the complexity of the surgery can increase this time. After installation, the base or fixture must remain inside the jaw bone for 2 to 4 months to fully fuse to the jaw bone.

Healing period and osteointegration (bone fusion)

This stage is practically the same as the duration of welding the base and fixture of the implant to the jawbone, which usually takes between 2 and 4 months, and it should not be inserted into the pressure implant during this time.

Installation of interface or abutment and temporary cover

After the base and fixture are well welded to the jawbone, an intermediate piece or interface called an abutment is installed on the base and a temporary dental cover is placed on it so that it does not look ugly. The duration of this process is between 30 minutes and 1 hour.

Molding and making dental veneers or crowns

At this stage, the dentist must take a mold of the tooth that wants to be implanted, which takes between 15 and 30 minutes, and then using this mold, the final dental cover for the implant is made in the laboratory, which lasts between 1 and 2 weeks.

installation of abutment and permanent cover or implant crown

After the dental cover is ready, the dentist installs it on the abutment using special materials, and the process of implanting your dental implant is practically completed, which does not take more than 30 to 60 minutes.

Factors affecting the duration of dental implant implantation

  • Quality and density of jaw bone: Bone with good quality and density allows for faster implantation of the implant, if the bone is weak or atrophied, bone grafting may be needed and delay in implantation.
  • Patient's general health condition: Chronic diseases such as uncontrolled diabetes, heart problems, and the use of certain medications can slow down the healing process and prolong the implantation time.
  • Presence of infection or inflammation at the implant site: The presence of active infection or inflammation causes the need for more time to heal before implant placement.
  • Type and number of implants: The number of more implants or the type of implant chosen can affect the overall duration.
  • Experience and expertise of the dentist: An experienced doctor can reduce the time of the procedure and the possibility of complications.
  • Implant planting method: the immediate method reduces the time of visits and treatment; But traditional methods usually take more time.
  • Post-surgery care: Following medical and health instructions will speed up the healing process.
  • The condition of the gums and the need for auxiliary surgeries such as bone grafting or sinus lift: if these surgeries are necessary, the time for implant placement will increase.
  • Lifestyle and diet: smoking, alcohol and poor diet can prolong the healing time.
