What does prolonged labor mean?

Childbirth is a unique experience for every woman, whether a first-time mother or a previous mother....sometimes the baby is born really fast....sometimes it's good, but not too fast....how quickly the baby is born depends on many factors, including how quickly this thing called labor happens.

Labor is a series of intense, successive muscle contractions.... These contractions help push the baby out of the uterus (womb) and into the birth canal.

You will probably feel these contractions in your lower back and abdomen. These are called labor pains. These contractions help the opening of the vagina (called the cervix) to widen. This process allows the baby to leave the body and be born.

Women who become mothers for the first time usually give birth between 12 and 18 hours on average. If you have had children before, the process is usually faster and takes about half that time.

Long labor What is it?

Sometimes the rate of labor slows down and the process is very slow... Prolonged labor is also called "non-progressive labor".

Long-term time can be determined by the stage of labor and whether the cervix has thinned and dilated properly during labor...according to some health experts, this happens after 18 to 24 hours.

Long-term time in twin or multiple pregnancies is labor that lasts more than 16 hours.

Gynecologists may refer to slow labor as a "long latent period".

Extended time occurs when:

  • The child is too big and cannot pass through the birth canal.
  • The child is in an abnormal position.. The child is usually with the head down and facing the mother's back.
  • The birth canal is very small for a baby.
  • Your contractions are very weak.

What will happen if labor progresses slowly?

Most women dream of a quick delivery... but if your labor seems to be going very slowly, knowing that your doctor, nurse or midwife will have you and your baby under complete control during this time.

The medical team will evaluate the following:

  • The number of contractions.
  • Strength of contractions.

The following tests may also be performed:

  • Insertion of Intrauterine Pressure Catheter (IUPC) - A small monitor tube is placed in the uterus, next to the baby, which not only tells the best obstetrician and infertility specialist that contractions are occurring, but also determines the intensity of the contractions... If the doctor feels that the contractions are not strong enough, they may also consider adding Bitcoin.
  • Continuous electronic fetal monitoring (EFM) to measure the heart rate of the baby.

What is the treatment for prolonged labour?

If the labor is progressing slowly, you may be told to rest for a while.... Sometimes medicines are prescribed to ease labor pain and help you relax.... You may feel more comfortable by changing your body position.

Additional treatment depends on the causes of labor delay.

If the baby is in the birth canal, the gynecologist or midwife may use special tools called forceps or a vacuum device to help pull the baby out through the vagina.

If the gynecologist feels that more or stronger contractions are needed, you may be given Pitocin (oxytocin). This medicine speeds up and strengthens the contractions.

Dangers of prolonged labor

Long time increases the possibility of needing cesarean section.

Too long labor can be dangerous for the baby.

  • Decreasing the child's oxygen level
  • Abnormal rhythm of the child's heart
  • Abnormal substances in amniotic fluid
  • uterine infection

If the baby is in distress, you will need an emergency delivery... This is when close monitoring is very important for your and the baby's health.
