Shoulder bursitis is a common cause of shoulder and arm pain. The most common type of shoulder bursitis is subacromial bursitis. The pain caused by shoulder bursitis develops over time and limits movement when raising the arm above the head or behind the neck or back. Here we discuss the common causes, symptoms and treatment options for shoulder bursitis and secondary problems. The shoulder bursa provides a cushion and a smooth surface for the tissues to slide freely over during movement without any friction.. A bursa is a soft sac containing synovial cells that produce a lubricating fluid.. There are over 150 bursae in the body between muscles, tendons and/or bones.. A bursa includes the following.. 1. 2 .... subscapular bursa 3 .... subcoracoid bursa 4 .... Coracoclavicular bursa 5 .... Supra acromial bursa 6 .... subdeltoid bursa Inflammation of any of these shoulder bursae can cause shoulder and arm pain. The most common type of shoulder bursitis is subacromial bursitis, which is often associated with shoulder impingement syndrome. Other bursae are located around the shoulder blade and their inflammation is called scapulothoracic bursitis. There are four main types of shoulder bursitis: - **Traumatic bursitis:** It is usually caused by an injury or blow to the shoulder in accidents such as a fall or an accident and can cause significant pain, swelling and limitation in range of motion... - **Infectious bursitis:** Sometimes the bursae become infected with bacteria and cause infectious bursitis.. Infectious bursitis can be caused by a penetrating injury or spread of infection from the adjacent area and cause pain, redness, heat and fever... Read: bursitis treatment in Shiraz + symptoms and prevention Symptoms of shoulder bursitis Symptoms of shoulder bursitis will vary depending on the extent of the injury, the type of bursitis, and the person's history of previous illnesses and surgeries. Sometimes there are only one or two of these symptoms, while others have all of them.. In addition, sometimes the symptoms are only mild pain in the early stages, and if shoulder bursitis is not treated, some shoulder inflammatory symptoms will resolve over time. As follows: ### Stiffness or swelling Shoulder bursitis usually causes shoulder stiffness....the muscles covering the bursa may be restricted due to the protective properties of the muscles or pain....In addition, if the bursa is infected or injured by trauma, the resulting swelling in the shoulder joint causes further limitation of motion and joint stiffness....### Shoulder pain when lifting heavy objects Anything that puts pressure on the shoulder joint and the muscles that lift the shoulder and arm, such as lifting weights, can cause shoulder pain from bursitis...even the pressure of lifting a child or several shopping bags can cause shoulder pain....the cause of this pain is inflammation and irritation of the damaged bursa and its associated tendons. Disrupt sleep... The pain caused by bursitis varies in intensity and in some cases it is so severe that it wakes the person up... For this reason, these people tend to sleep on their healthy side so as not to put too much pressure on the affected bursa... ### Severe pain or burning when moving the shoulder to raise the arm above the head Raising the arms overhead can also cause shooting pain or pain along the arm.. The cause is usually nerve irritation or referred pain... Nerve irritation can lead to numbness, tingling, and severe pain in the arm.. Read more: Shoulder Pain + 11 Common Shoulder Injuries How to treat shoulder bursitis pain To treat the symptoms of shoulder bursitis and reduce pain and inflammation, most home remedies for shoulder bursitis are sufficient.... The following five home remedies are great ways to start reducing pain and maintaining good range of motion.. Chances of subsidence.... In some cases, complete immobilization of the arm with a brace is necessary.... rest usually relieves symptoms along with other home remedies for shoulder bursitis.... ### 2... ice In the acute phase, ice can help calm inflammation and relieve acute pain.. The use of ice compresses in the first 24 hours significantly reduces the pain. After the first 24 hours with heating pads and warm baths, blood flow to the shoulder area and capsule is significantly relieved. The best medications for shoulder bursitis are usually over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen. The best treatments for shoulder bursitis are a combination of home remedies and more interventions... Expected physical therapy treatments for shoulder bursitis are as follows... The physical therapist can help correct any underlying physical problems that may be causing the inflammation... To do this, the supporting muscles of the shoulder must be strengthened and the range of motion must support movement techniques and proper exercises.. ### 6.... CARE Chiropractic In chiropractic care, manipulations of the spine are used to realign the spine.... This method is effective in solving any problem caused by the misalignment of the vertebrae of the spine \_ especially in the upper parts\_ in the shoulder... ### 7.... Acupuncture Acupuncture is one of the principles of traditional Chinese medicine for clearing blocked channels in the body's energy meridians. In this method, needles as thin as a hair are inserted into certain parts of the body depending on the desired disease. According to the results of preliminary studies, acupuncture significantly reduces shoulder pain compared to interstitial treatments. ##Acupuncture therapy.. In some cases, injection into the joint is recommended to relieve pain and inflammation, but this method is not the first line of treatment and generally only if the measures are effective. It is used conservatively.. but in cases of severe or chronic pain, shoulder injections can be used to reduce pain for other treatments such as physiotherapy... ### 9... Shoulder tension bursitis After reducing inflammation and pain, shoulder bursitis stretching helps restore (and increase) range of motion and improve shoulder health.. These low-impact stretches can be done every day... To maintain shoulder balance, it is better to do these shoulder bursitis exercises for both shoulders.. ### Circular movement of the shoulder Stand (or sit on a chair and place both feet on the floor).... Raise both shoulders to the ears at the same time and keep them still at the end of the tail.... Exhale and roll your shoulders back and down until the shoulder blades are close together at the back.... Repeat this movement five to ten times a day.... ### Hand Push Stand next to a wall, with the injured shoulder against the wall....bend your elbow at a 90 degree angle and press the back of your hand against the wall....hold this pressure for five seconds....repeat this exercise five to 15 times a day....### Stretching with bands Hold a strap or a belt between your hands, so that your hands are wider than shoulder-width apart and the palms are facing down....In one breath, while keeping the arms straight, raise them above your head....Hold for five seconds and then slowly lower the arms....Repeat this movement five to ten times....As the shoulder symptoms improve, you can inhale and exhale to keep the arms straight.. spread the arms apart), then inhale and bring them up and over the head again.... ### Shoulder opening Stand facing the wall (front of body should be in contact with the wall) .... raise the arm of the injured shoulder with the elbow bent at a 90 degree angle and place it on the wall (palm facing the wall) ... slowly begin to rotate your body so that the raised arm is flat on the wall, but the body is away from the wall ... repeat each side one more time to see the patient .... healing effects .... moving too quickly or ignoring severe pain will only prolong the healing process or bursitis It aggravates the shoulder, so proceed with caution....
