If you have recently placed implant If you are, you probably have these questions: How exactly is implant molding done? When should you go for it? And what care is needed after molding? Next, we will discuss the complete steps of dental implant molding and other cases.

What is implant molding and why is it important?

Implant molding is a step in which the exact shape of the gum, the position of the implant and the dental relationship are recorded so that the laboratory can abutment and the final veneer from

Steps of implant molding step by step

Step 1: Assessment and Preparation

  • Clinical examination, radiography and soft tissue health around the healing cap.
  • Deciding about the molding method (closed, open or digital) and choosing materials/parts.

Step 2: Remove the healing cap and put on the cupping

  • Open healing cap and Impression Coping fit on the implant (torque/tighten according to the system). In the open-tree method, the coping must protrude from the tree window.

Step 3: Extracting the template

  • Closetery: A tray filled with molding material is placed on the arch, after the tray is set, it is removed and the coping is repositioned inside the mold.
  • Opentree: After being set, the coping screw is removed from the open window and the mold with the coping; This minimizes displacement error.
  • Digital: Scanbody closes; Sometimes cord retraction is used to reveal the margins and scanning is done immediately.

Step 4: Byte registration (occlusion) and color

  • Byte recorder (byte registration) is done to recreate the correct contacts as well as choose the color/material of the final cover.

Step 5: Send to the laboratory

  • The mold (or digital file) is sent to the laboratory to make a master model with the implant analog and then the abutment/covering is designed and produced. In common laboratory work, it usually takes 1 to 2 weeks (depending on the lab and type of work) to make the cover.

Step 6: Prove and deliver the cover

  • In the next session, the abutment/examination cover, contact adjustment and soft tissue compatibility are checked and finally screws or cement. The duration of the molding session is usually about 45-60 minutes, but it varies depending on the complexity of the case and the number of implants.

When is molding done? (Treatment timeline)

After the implantation of the implant, the body enters the phase of osseointegration (fusion of bone and titanium). This stage usually lasts 3 to 6 months; It is sometimes faster in the lower jaw and a little longer in the upper jaw. In new protocols, immediate or early loading is also possible, depending on the bone condition and initial stability, but the general rule is still the same wait of several months

Practical outcome for the patient: In most non-urgent cases, the final molding is done after welding is completed to ensure accuracy and long-term stability. In some special cases (excellent initial stability, adequate number of implants, systematic factors controlled), earlier casting/reconstruction may be done—this decision should be made by the treatment team based on the evidence and your situation.

Care after implant molding

Important difference: Care after implant surgery is different from care after molding. Molding is a non-invasive process, but the gums may be slightly irritated.

  • Oral hygiene: Gentle brushing around the implant site and using interdental floss/brush as instructed. If the gum is a little sensitive, reduce the pressure.
  • Mouthwash: There is usually no need for a special mouthwash; In case of gum irritation, lukewarm salt water from the next day can help. (For the period after surgery, it is recommended to start salt water after 24 hours.)
  • Diet: On the day of molding, do not eat very hard or sticky foods so as not to irritate the tissue. Liquids and soft foods are less risky options.
  • Not touching the parts: If the healing cap is temporarily opened and closed, try not to manipulate the area.
  • Communication with the office: Any unusual pain, bleeding or loose screws should be reported to the dentist.

If you have just had surgery: Do not manipulate the wound on the first day, strong washing and strong spitting are prohibited; From the second day, lukewarm salt water and strict hygiene according to the surgical training sheet.

Total time from molding to cover delivery

The duration of implant impression is as follows:

  • Moulding session time: about 45 to 60 minutes for normal cases.
  • Lab Time: Usually 1-2 weeks until abutment/covering is ready (depending on type of restoration, material, and lab traffic
  • Delivery session: Final testing and tuning, then final delivery (usually 30-60 minutes).
  • If you have had a digital scan: In many clinics, the number of sessions and the duration of each session are reduced, and laboratory visits are managed more quickly.

Common casting errors and solutions (for professional readers/clinics)

  • Mismatch in multiple implants: Incorrect choice of method (closer) can cause mismatch; In these cases, opentree and even splinting the copings increase accuracy.
  • Incorrect repositioning in cloister: Accuracy in placing the transfer inside the mold and controlling the rotation is required.
  • Challenge of soft tissue in digital scanning: Gentle retraction prior to scanning helps read margins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have pain after molding?

Usually no. Maybe you have a little gum sensitivity, which can be resolved by observing gentle hygiene and short-term food abstinence.

If I have multiple implants, which method is best for me?

Generally, for multiple implants or angled implants, opentree or digital impression are more accurate; The final decision is with the treating dentist.

How long does it take from molding to final coating?

Usually 1 to 2 weeks of laboratory time is required; But depending on the material (zirconia/metal-ceramic/monolithic), the amount of lab work and the complexity of the case change.
