What is a comprehensive metabolic panel test?

Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) consists of a series of blood tests that give your doctor an overview of your body chemistry and how your body uses energy (metabolism)..damage to your liver or kidneys....they ask you not to eat or drink anything for up to 12 hours before the test.

Comprehensive metabolic panel testing provides such information to the physician:

  • Functional status of kidney or liver
  • Blood sugar level
  • Electrolyte amount
  • Protein amount in blood
  • Balance between acid and base in blood
  • Functional state of body metabolism

Physician may substitute Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) with Basic Metabolic Panel (BMP) based on medical history and treatment needs.. 8 of CMP tests are repeated in BMP.. Liver and protein tests are not included in Basic Panel.

Comprehensive metabolic panel test method

A doctor or nurse takes a sample from the arm vein using a special needle. The blood sample is placed inside the tube or vial. You will feel a slight burning sensation as the needle enters and exits the body. This step usually takes less than 5 minutes.

You may feel some pain or slight bruising where the needle was inserted, but most symptoms disappear quickly.

Comprehensive Metabolic Panel Test Results

The doctor examines all the tests at the same time to determine the physical pattern and condition of the patient...

If you are in the hospital, the doctor prescribes a series of daily tests....If you are not in the hospital, but you suffer from diseases such as diabetes or kidney failure, you should go to the doctor's office or clinic every few months for the necessary tests.

In the compiled report, one column records the reference values and another column is dedicated to the results.... If the results are within the reference range, they are considered normal.... If you are above or below these limits, the results are considered abnormal.

Many factors affect CMP.. Some of these factors are:

  • Consumable drugs such as steroids, insulin and hormones
  • Eating and drinking before the test
  • Exercise before the test
  • Damage of blood cells during collection or related processing

If none of the results match what you expect, the doctor will order more tests... Therefore, the conditions for checking the validity of the results are more carefully set.

Normal results for CMP

Reference ranges depend on the laboratory where the test is performed....what is the reason?..the main reason is that different laboratories use their own specialized equipment..in addition, the methods of blood sample analysis are also different...below are the usual normal ranges...always consider the ranges for your report..the reason is that the doctor will benefit from this information.

Dozens of different tests are included in the CMP....the doctor changes a limited number of them to look for signs of disease in the body....Next, the most important tests in the CMP are introduced.

CMP liver tests

These tests measure the concentration of three substances produced in the liver: 1- ALP, 2- ALT, 3- AST... In addition, bilirubin, one of the waste substances produced in the liver, is also measured... Normal ranges are:

  • ALP (alkaline phosphatase): 44-147 international units per liter
  • ALT (alanine aminotransferase): 7-40 IU/L
  • AST (aspartate aminotransferase): 10-34
  • Bilirubin: 0.3-1.9 mg/dL

CMP kidney test

In these tests, two of the kidney waste products, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and creatinine are checked. Normal ranges are:

  • BUN (blood urea nitrogen): 20-60 mg
  • Creatinine: 0.6-3 mg/dL

CMP electrolyte test

The role of electrolyte is to help balance the body's fluid status.... In addition to heart rate, muscle and brain function are also controlled by electrolytes... Abnormal results mean you have heart or kidney disease... or that your body fluids are reduced (dehydration)... Normal ranges are:

  • Sodium: 136-145 ml equivalent
  • Potassium: 3.5 to 5.1 mE/L
  • Cl: 96-106
  • Co2: 23-29 meq/l

CMP protein test

In comprehensive metabolic panel tests, the concentration of albumin, the main protein produced in the liver, is measured, as well as other proteins in the blood. Proteins play an essential role in ensuring the health of muscles, bones, blood and organs.

  • Albumin: 3.4 to 5.4 g/dL
  • Total protein: 6 to 8.3 g/dL

CMP glucose test

It is commonly called a blood sugar test... If your blood sugar level is high, it means you have diabetes.. If the values are low, it means you have hypoglycemia... The normal range is 70-99 mg/dL.

CMP calcium test

Calcium is an important substance for maintaining healthy muscles, nerves, and hormones... If calcium is abnormal, you probably have a hormonal imbalance or kidney, bone, or pancreatic damage. The normal range is between 8.6 and 10.2.

Don't forget that with the services of GCORP LLC you can use testing services at home or at work instead of going to the lab.
