Having straight teeth and a beautiful smile can boost self-confidence. If you have overjets, sometimes called buck teeth, you may feel uncomfortable and hide your smile. You may even avoid social settings, which can lead to feelings of isolation and depression. But there are treatments that can help.
What does an overjet look like?
Overjet is when the upper teeth protrude and fit over the lower teeth. Having an overjet doesn't just affect your appearance. You may also have trouble chewing, drinking, and biting. It may even cause jaw pain.
Some overjets are mild and barely noticeable, while others are more severe. Along with difficulty biting or chewing, misalignment of your teeth can make it difficult to close your lips completely. You may also have trouble speaking or bite your tongue or the inside of your cheek frequently.
Remember, though, that it's normal for your upper front teeth to slightly overlap your lower teeth when you close your mouth. They are usually 2 mm apart. But if you have an overjet, your upper front teeth may be pushed more than 2 millimeters forward than your lower teeth.
### What causes an overjet?
There is no single cause of overjet, but several variables can contribute to the condition.
Sometimes, overjet is hereditary. So if your mom or dad has one, you might as well create one. This can happen if you have an underdeveloped jawbone that causes your upper teeth to protrude more than they should.
But genetics isn't the only reason. If you have a habit of sucking your thumb or fingers as a child, overjet may also occur.
Also, using a pacifier for a long time can lead to overjet.
#### Treatment of overjet
**Overjet treatment with dental braces**
Dental braces are designed to straighten and align teeth by gradually moving them to a new location. There are many types of braces available for overjet, including traditional metal braces and removable clear aligners.
The time frame for overjet correction with dental braces will vary depending on the severity of the overjet. Usually, you use a brace for about 12 to 24 months.

The doctor may also suggest overjet treatment with veneers. This is a piece of porcelain that is attached to the front surface of your tooth. This is a custom design that mimics the natural appearance of your teeth.

They can also refer you to an orthodontist to discuss treatment options. An orthodontist specializes in jaw and teeth alignment issues and can install dental braces.
You may need corrective jaw surgery for severe overjet, in which case you will see an oral surgeon. This method can realign your jaw and teeth.
Overjet is not always a problem. But sometimes, it can make it difficult for people to talk, eat, chew, and drink.
If you have problems, or don't like the way an overjet looks, talk to your dentist. They can determine an appropriate treatment plan for you or refer you to an orthodontist.
Overjet treatment not only makes it easier to do some things. It can also improve your smile and boost your self-confidence.
