Necessary ultrasounds in pregnancy

Now that you know you are pregnant, the health of you and your baby will be under control throughout the pregnancy. Careful monitoring is done through tests and ultrasounds of both of you to ensure your health and assess the possible risk of fetal abnormalities. Ultrasound has become a regular and highly effective part of prenatal care and is now used as an accepted method worldwide to aid in the clinical management of pregnancy.

pregnancy

In early pregnancy, ultrasound is used to confirm fetal heartbeat and ectopic pregnancy. In the next stages, estimating the duration of pregnancy, improving the diagnosis of fetal abnormalities, ectopic pregnancies, and improving women's pregnancy experience are among the things that make this test necessary.

With the help of ultrasound, you can hear your baby's heartbeat and its age is estimated. The fetus is very small in the first trimester and is growing by millimeters every day. Through this test, your doctor can determine the exact date for delivery and evaluate the milestones during your pregnancy. If there is any doubt that you may be in preterm labor, an ultrasound can be useful to check the length of your cervix.

types Pregnancy ultrasound

A mother may have 3 to 4 ultrasounds during pregnancy, but in some cases, the doctor may prescribe more or repeat ultrasounds to know more about the health of the mother and the fetus.

In general, ultrasounds during pregnancy are divided into two categories; The usual ultrasounds that every pregnant woman needs to perform, and the diagnostic and complementary ultrasounds that are requested to be performed by a specialist doctor if necessary.

In this article, we explain about the two types of NT and anomaly ultrasounds, which are part of the usual ultrasounds.

SonograFiNT

NT ultrasound is a prenatal screening evaluation performed to detect chromosomal abnormalities associated with Down syndrome, one of the most common genetic conditions affecting infants. Screening also determines the risk of Pateau and Edwards syndromes, rare and often fatal chromosomal abnormalities.

Usually NT ultrasound is done between 11 and 13 weeks, when the clear tissue behind the neck of the fetus is visible.

It is worth noting that the accuracy of ultrasound screening in identifying newborn risk factors for chromosomal abnormalities is -70 to 75%. This will help your doctor assess your risks and, if necessary, determine whether further testing is needed.

Ultrasound Anomaly

Anomaly scan is a scan of the uterus and fetus in the abdomen, which is one of the most important diagnostic scans during a pregnancy. In this method, the fetus must be at a stage where all its organs are known to be evaluated. For this reason, it is usually done in the second trimester of pregnancy and between 18 and 20 weeks.

This ultrasound is actually used to identify cases that occur outside the normal state of the fetus. Rare cases that will happen in pregnancy can be identified with this method.

In the 20th week, things such as the position of the fetus, the shape and size of the face and hands can be seen. In most ultrasounds, you can see the image of the fetus on the monitor with the permission of the sonographer. You will be shown the heartbeat and also the different parts of the fetus's body, but you may not understand anything about the different parts of his body.

While doctors don't know what causes it, they do know that women 35 and older have a higher chance of having a baby with Down syndrome. If you have already had a child with Down syndrome, you will have the possibility of having another child with this problem.

The main purpose of anomalous ultrasound is to confirm the normal growth of the fetus, but besides this important purpose, you can find out the gender of the fetus and have a photo of it or know the exact time of delivery. This scan takes about 20 minutes or more.

Also, if you are concerned about fetal chromosomal problems, this scan can pick up subtle signs that may indicate your baby is at increased risk for these syndromes. Examples of these signs include: thick skin on the back of the neck, excess fluid in the kidneys, short arms or legs, white spots on the heart or abdomen, and the presence of cysts in the brain.

Result: If you have abnormal ultrasound results, the first thing you should do before consulting a doctor is to stay calm. An abnormal test result is a statistical probability, not an accurate diagnosis. Remember that in ultrasound results, most babies are normal and this scan provides more confidence to mothers. It is also important to note that this is a screening test and positive or negative findings detected during the scan cannot guarantee the result.
