What is the cause of hand numbness due to neck disc? Hand numbness is caused by cervical disc due to pressure on nerve roots. The cervical discs between the vertebrae have the role of shock absorbers; But when they protrude or erode, they may put pressure on the cervical nerves. This pressure disrupts the transmission of nerve messages to the hand and leads to symptoms such as numbness, tingling or muscle weakness in the fingers. Depending on the location of the injury, symptoms may appear in different fingers. For example, a disc injury in the C6-C7 vertebrae causes numbness in the middle finger. If this pressure is not treated in time, it may lead to chronic problems or permanent weakness in the hands. It is necessary to pay attention to the early symptoms and see a specialist to prevent further damage. Symptoms of hand numbness due to cervical disc What pains does the cervical disc cause? As mentioned, cervical disc pain and related symptoms may be felt in one or both hands; It depends on the damaged disc and the nerve fibers involved or inflamed. For this reason, symptoms can appear in different ways. Among the most important symptoms of neck disc and hand numbness are: - Neck pain (usually felt in the back or side of the neck) - Radicular pain - Tingling or numbness (this problem is caused by compression of the nerve in the neck and involves the fingers, shoulder and arm) - Sensation of heat or electric shock - Neck stiffness - Pain and numbness in fingers and palms - Feeling of weakness in the arms and shoulders - Headache - Limitation of range of motion and difficulty in motor skills - Insomnia and dizziness Cervical disk diagnosis methods and hand numbness 35 years and later is **the starting age of cervical disc**. Of course, a person may get this condition faster due to various reasons such as sports injuries, trauma or genetics. Whether or not you have cervical disc disease requires careful diagnostic tests. In general, for accurate diagnosis of neck disc and hand numbness, tests are performed as follows: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) The most common and most accurate imaging test to confirm a disc is an MRI. In this method, using magnetic field and computer imaging of the spinal cord structure, nerve roots, inflammation, degeneration and other disc problems are well diagnosed. ### Computed tomography scan (CT scan) In this method, using X-rays, the shape and size of the spinal canal, the condition of the bones and structures of the disc and its surroundings are displayed. X-rays can help rule out other causes of back or neck pain. ### Electromyogram (EMG) test This type of cervical disc diagnostic test and hand numbness diagnose cervical spinal stenosis. This test involves inserting small needles into different muscles and evaluating nerve function. An EMG can help determine which nerve the herniated disc is affecting. In fact, in this method, electric shocks are measured along nerve fibers and muscle tissues. ### Myelogram or spinal cord scan In this method, after injecting the contrast agent into the cerebrospinal fluid spaces, X-ray imaging is done from the spinal canal. ### X-rays This test, using X-ray radiation, can show the exact structure of the vertebrae. Treatment methods for neck disc and finger pain **The treatment methods for cervical disc herniation** and hand numbness will be carried out in the following ways: ### Heat therapy and cold therapy To reduce swelling and damage, the doctor may ask you to use an ice compress on the injured area for a day or two, and then use a heat compress to help relax the muscles and improve their stiffness; Of course, this treatment method is recommended for partial and mild neck discs. ### Physiotherapy **Can cervical disc be treated with physical therapy?** A question that many patients want to know about. Yes, it is also possible to treat neck disc and hand numbness through physiotherapy. Physiotherapy includes stretching, strength, endurance and other rehabilitation exercises that restore strength to the muscles and help improve blood flow in the neck and spine. ### Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs To reduce cervical disc symptoms and hand numbness, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or pain relievers may be prescribed to help reduce inflammation and improve symptoms faster. ### Injection of corticosteroids These injectable drugs help to reduce the numbing inflammation in the affected area. ### Cervical disc surgery If the non-surgical treatments of the cervical disc do not have a positive effect on the reduction of hand numbness, the treatment will be performed through surgery. Surgery is performed in different ways. The goal of surgery is to repair the damaged disc. In some acute cases, it may even be necessary to replace part of the disc with an artificial prosthesis. Numbness of the fingers and its connection with the neck disc Cervical disc is caused due to damage or compression of the disc and the release of jelly fluid inside the disc. This can put pressure on the nerves and cause pain and numbness. Cervical disc is one of the common problems that people complain about. This complication can be associated with symptoms such as heat or electric shock, neck stiffness, weakness in the arms and shoulders, difficulty in movement skills, etc. Through performing various imaging tests such as MRI, electromyogram test, myelogram and X-ray, the exact cause of the cervical disc can be found. The treatment will be conservative through heat therapy, cold therapy, physiotherapy and medication. If non-invasive methods are not effective, surgery will be the final treatment option. If cervical disc causes numbness in your hands, first of all, you should look for experienced and skilled doctors like Dr. Yazdan Panahi. Visiting skilled and experienced doctors makes the cause of the disc correctly identified and the treatment process is followed in a principled and successful manner.
