Hello

My name is Behnam and this is the sixth episode of the second season of the "Best of You" podcast

Today we want to talk about the disease that most families are struggling with.. because going up is a pain, going down is another pain, "diabetes".

Did you know that diabetes is one of the most common endocrine diseases that affects more than 400 million people in the world.... This disease is increasing day by day in all developing countries, so diabetes can be safely called one of the most important health challenges.

In this episode, as in the previous episodes, we are at the service of Dr. Babakhanian and we ask him your questions, but first, let's go see what diabetes is?

Diabetes is a disease that causes problems in the production or function of insulin in the body.. In fact, insulin is a hormone that is made by the pancreas and secreted into the blood.. So if insulin does not do its job well, blood sugar rises and if it is not controlled in the long term, it causes cardiovascular and kidney diseases..

Diabetes is generally divided into two main types:

Type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.

  • Type 1 diabetes, formerly known as insulin-dependent diabetes, is an autoimmune disease. In fact, the body's immune cells react against insulin-producing cells and destroy them by releasing antibodies, so that the body is unable to produce insulin...
  • Type 2 diabetes, which used to be called non-insulin-dependent diabetes.. causes the body to not be able to make enough insulin for various reasons or the amount that it has made does not perform its tasks well in the body.... This condition occurs when the body is resistant to insulin.... This type of diabetes appears mostly in people over 30 years of age with obesity, which can be controlled in the early stages by following a proper diet, exercising, taking drugs, and even taking a lot of drugs and even taking drugs and the body's needs for them. Control their blood, sugar.
Of course, it is not bad to know that other types of diabetes are less important than the previous two types.. For example: Gestational diabetes, which is related to pregnant women who did not have diabetes before pregnancy, and who develop diabetes during this period, the main cause of which is still unknown.

Other factors such as: genetic diseases, surgical complications, medications, malnutrition and infection may cause other types of diabetes.

What factors cause diabetes?

Two factors are necessary to develop any type of diabetes.. First, the affected person must have inherited the genetic predisposition to the disease.. or a cause in his life environment causes the disease to start.

  • Type 1 diabetes is more dependent on environmental factors...as far as genetics...so that in identical twins who are genetically identical, if one of them is infected, the probability of the other being infected is only 50%.

The most important environmental factor is the presence of some viruses such as measles... the body's immune cells secrete antibodies against these viruses, which destroy beta cells of the pancreas in genetically predisposed people... of course, sometimes these viruses alone can destroy these cells.

Another factor goes back to infancy, if cow's milk is included in the diet earlier than the doctor allows for the initiation of complementary foods...the likelihood of developing type 1 diabetes increases.

  • Genetic predisposition plays an important role in type 2 diabetes... in such a way that 90% of identical twins get it at the same time and family history plays a major role in this type of diabetes... Of course, environmental conditions should not be underestimated.. Those who consume a lot of fat and few fruits and vegetables, are not physically active, have a history of gestational diabetes and are obese, are more prone to developing type 2 diabetes.

In gestational diabetes, there is a family history in most patients. But environmental factors such as: obesity, age over 25 years and a history of complications in previous pregnancies such as high blood pressure, giving birth to a large baby, abortion for no reason and congenital abnormalities in the baby play a big role.

Prevention is better than cure. But how should we prevent diabetes?

Primary prevention includes actions that every person with a history of diabetes should take, according to what we said, it is better to exercise regularly and keep your weight low so as not to get fat.

But if he has diabetes, his blood sugar should be carefully controlled to prevent diabetes complications.

The questions we asked Dr. Babakhanian in this episode:

  • What are the early symptoms of diabetes?
  • What does sugar drop mean and why does it happen?
  • Can diabetics eat sweet foods?
  • What is hidden diabetes and how important is it?
  • Which one is more dangerous between type 1 and type 2 diabetes?
  • Just by not consuming sugar.. can we avoid Prevent diabetes?
  • How important is blood sugar measurement and is there a difference between a blood test and a home test or not?

Well we have reached the end of the sixth episode of the second season of our podcast and as always
