A gummy smile is the way the teeth show when smiling. In this case, the movements of a person's teeth and lips when laughing and even talking do not hide their gums.
The beautiful play of teeth and gums is very vital in people's health. In addition to their role in actions such as chewing or speaking, they can increase a person's self-confidence. However, one of the most common problems with the appearance of the gums is an abnormal gummy smile.
**Causes of a gummy smile?**
In normal people, only 1 to 2 mm of gums appear when smiling, but in people with a gummy smile, this amount increases up to 7 mm. A gummy smile causes more mental and emotional problems than physical problems. A person with this problem feels ugly when talking or smiling, and most of the time it causes embarrassment to the people around him and avoids others. In gummy smile, due to the position of the gums, the person can damage the end part of the gum attached to the tooth while eating or brushing and cleaning the teeth. Based on this, it can lead to gingival inflammation and bleeding.
There are two types of treatment for this problem, surgical and non-surgical. In the surgical method, the gummy smile problem is solved by performing jaw surgery along with various techniques. This method is invasive and, like any other surgery, it brings complications.
Orthodontic treatment is used when gingival malocclusion is caused by small teeth or jaw abnormalities and the patient is young. TADs technology is commonly used in gummy smile treatment. This problem can also be corrected by treating the deformity of the upper jaw or even the lower jaw.
Non-surgical methods for gum smile treatment are mainly outpatient methods. This procedure can be done in the dental clinic and the person can do his daily activities in a very short time after the operation.
**Botox**
Another treatment is to use Botox. In this method, by injecting liquid botulinum toxin, a controlled paralysis is created in the muscles that raise the lips during the process of smiling. As a result, when smiling, the lip muscles do not work properly and gummy smile is treated. Keep in mind that this method is used for a specific group of patients based on the orthodontist's diagnosis.
Another important factor that should be considered in botox injection is the dose of botox that is about to be injected into the muscles around the mouth. If the amount of poison is less than the expected amount, it will have low effectiveness, and if the amount of injected poison is not controlled and injected without study, it can disturb the balance of the facial components and cause unnecessary muscle paralysis.

Gel injection is used to treat gummy smile. In this method, to increase the volume of the lips, a gel is injected into the lips, which creates more coverage when smiling. Different types of injectable materials and hyaluronic acid are used for injection. Sometimes, fat injection can be used as a treatment by an orthodontist.
But during the injection, if the person who performs this operation is not professional, it can cause hematoma and severe bleeding of the lip. Allergic reactions and bruising are other possible side effects. This method can be performed for a limited number of patients under the supervision of an orthodontic specialist.
