Don't be surprised if your baby cries a lot. Babies can cry up to 2 hours a day in the first 3 months of life. But if your baby has colic, it is likely that:
- cries for an unknown reason - even when he doesn't need to eat or change a diaper
- You start crying in the evening or at a certain time of the day
- You cry for 3 hours or more every day, more than 3 days a week and for at least 3 weeks.
- Does not settle even after feeding or rocking
### **other symptoms of colic**
A child with colic may:
- Punch his hands
- Bend the arms and legs towards the stomach
- Have abdominal bloating
- Red and flushed face when crying
- When crying, often expels gas due to swallowed air
- His abdominal muscles are tight
If your baby has colic, the doctor may be able to diagnose it based on the symptoms....you can help too....note the following for a few days:
- When and how much does your baby cry? - What is the sound of crying? Is his voice lower than usual or louder? - What do you think is bothering him? - What works to calm him down
- How often and what does your child eat? - When does your child poop and what is his stool like (big or small, loose or hard)
The doctor will likely check for other causes of the child's discomfort, such as:
- Food allergy or sensitivity to something in your diet, if you are breastfeeding
- Being uncomfortable, such as when the child is too hot or too cold
- Hunger or weakness
- Pain caused by illness or injury
- Reflux
**Time to contact the pediatrician**
If your baby isn't gaining or losing weight, it could be something else, so it's best to call your doctor.. In addition, if your child:
- It does not calm down even for a few minutes
- Does not suck milk bottle or breast tightly
- He does not like to be hugged or touched
- Crying strangely or crying as if in pain
- Diarrhea or blood in the stool
- He has breathing problems
- He is less alert or more sleepy than usual
- He eats less than usual
- Fever of 100.4 degrees or more
- He is vomiting
- He may be sick or injured
- Less wet diapers
